How do you carry your Balisong???

When I was a teenager (not soo long ago) I played around with some cheap bali's. They being rather crappy, I soon moved on to the next thing, switch blades. A little later I bought my first Spyderco Endura, and have been pretty much sold on that concept since. Recently though my interest in butterfly knives has been rekindled, thanks to, among others, the internetpages of Clay, Susan, Fred Perrin and Golnick. At the moment though two factors keep my infatuation with the Bali from blooming into a wild romance.

These factors are first that I have trouble finding a high quality Bali that is legal in my country. So Benchmade if you listening Please, Please, Pleaeaeaessssssseeeeee!!!!!!!!! Make a version of the 42 with a blade length shorter than 9cm (that being the legal limit).

And second facter is the question of how best to carry the Bali so it will not draw attention to itself and to my, but be still easily to draw.

This is where I you hope you'll be able to help with. What are the best way in which to comfortably carry you Balisong? And how do you carry yours?

Thanks,
JD

Horizontal sheath on your belt is probably the easiest way; doesn't poke your side, easy to flip the flap on the sheath and execute an opening. With your shirt over it than that takes away from the visual aspect so a peace officer won't ask what it is. In your pocket it is totally out of sight but it takes longer to draw it, I guess it just depends on if you want to carry it for self defense or for utility use.

Hey,
I just made a Kydex sheath for my BM 42 and carry it horizontal on my belt. I will attach a different clip for a vertical carry if needed.

Thanks to several suggestions from other sheath designs out there my sheath is pretty cool indeed, will try to post pics soon..

9cm is 3.54 inches. The actual sharpened edge on a 42 is 3.45" linearly. Of course, how you measure it is another question. From the end of the kick where the grind begins to the tip is 3.64". Well, you could easily regrind the blade to take 2/10 of an inch off without loosing much function or appearance.

As for carry techniques, I use a horizontal sheath as you can see in the video on my website. It doesn't seem to attract any attention. In Oregon, however, such a carry is considered unconcealed even if the sheath completely coverers the knife. As long as it is obviously a knife sheath and as long as the sheath is carried in a conventional position (such as hanging from one's belt) and as long as the sheath is not concealed, then the knife is considered unconcealed. Aside from the fact that I prefer to tuck my shirt in for a cleaner appearance, allowing your shirt to cover the sheath is concealment.

Sadly, I don't carry mine at all. I get too worried about the local constabulary. I do carry a stiff KISS, or tactical folder, depending on where I'm going. Horizontal on the belt, anyway.

Some great ideas, thanks.

If you had the choice, what would you prefer: a sheath made out of leather, cloth or kydex/consealex. And way. Wich one would be quickest?

For me, horizontal carry with the latch handle down is the only way to go. I carry mine in a sweet bali sheath by Gary Graly of G2 Leatherworks.
No flap to mess with. You just grab the end and push it out. Quick latch drop and you're ready for business.
