We were on a wine country tour in France and I asked our French, English speaking guide where I could by one using my best guess at pronunciation and she had no idea what I was talking about. What is the correct way to pronounce it.

my canadian french may not be exactly the same as that of France but I would pronounce it La- gy-uh-l . it looks kind of funny written like that. the "lag" is the same as english, the "i" should carry to the next syllable like the letter "y" would, ignore the "u" altogether and the ending should have more of a "uh" instead of how "o" sounds. hope that makes sense

Morrow appears to be correct.

From Wikipedia:
"The Laguiole knife is a high-quality traditional French pocket-knife, originally produced in the town of Laguiole in the Aveyron region of southern France.

The word "Laguiole", pronounced /lɑːˈjɔːl/ "la-yoll", is a generic term, not legally restricted to any one company or place of manufacture...."

Oui, il est bien prononcé "layole". Most of my French-speaking friends would say La-Gwee-ol though, with the emphasis on La, including a French-speaking colleague at work, who owns one.

You know the moviestar Yul Brenner?

Phonetically, it sounds like "La Yul"

That's how we pronounced in in the South of France (I used to live there).

In the south of France: "la-yole"; in the north: "lag-yole". When the edge hits the spring, which is often the case, you can pronounce: "thiscrap".

dantzk.

I bought some of those steak knives (antique ivory, etc.) on ebay. The ivory was plastic and the rest is stamped. I now spell it J U N K. To be fair though, some are good. You have to be careful.

Yul Brynner would probably kick your butt if he knew he was somehow being associated with France, and of course, if he wasn't dead.

Yul Brynner has lived and worked in Paris from 1934 to 1941. He married a french woman in 1967. He rests in peace in the cemetery of the copt monastery of Saint Michel De Bois Aubry near the town of Luzé in the Touraine area, France.

Somehow?

Allow me to pull this size 11 shoe out of my mouth!

Yul Brenner remained a chain smoker even after he found out he was dying of lung cancer. I'd say that in of itself would make him an honorary Frenchman.

LOL! You were expecting pre-ban ivory from a private Kenyan reserve on eBay for $4.99 for a steak set? ;)

Seriously, I know what you mean - I have seen "Laguiole" Cheese Knives at TJ-Maxx and Marshall's for $7.99 a set, all stamped "Made in France". I guess "brand control" is a serious issue with the three or four manufacturers who have all been given the "rights" to the "bee" trademark. A few years ago I contacted one of their more "serious" makers (Patanaud? something like that) to offer them some marketing/branding advice but nothing ever came of it. I have handled full-size models priced at around $400 - $600 from an "Authorized Distributor" but wasn't impressed with the quality.

The Laguioles I've been looking at are Robert David laguioles from that World Market website. I've heard they are supposed to be good.
