How do you store your knives?

My collection is growing (much to the dismay of my wife) and I am wanting a better way to store my knives for ready access. While I have some knives that I like more than others, I only really buy knives that I see myself using. I currently just store them in the box, but I find that that takes up too much room. I plan on storing all of the boxes stashed away in the basement, and I want a better way to store the knives themselves, so I am wanting suggestions from the forumites here.

Whats your method?

In the safe,on the nightstand,in the top dresser drawer. I hate to say they are sometimes scattered. I like to rotate in and out of the safe mostly. Goy a nice dehumidifier in there so the carbon blades and guns don't rust.;) Teah, the wife gets on me about "knives everywhere"! lol

I generally put mine on top of my dresser, or in a drawer.

It's really hard to find a method that facilitates 'ready access' better than having them sitting in the open, within arms reach when you get up in the morning. :D

I have a knife case for those folders that I use from time to time and want easy access to but neatly stored somewhere. It's basically a nylon bag that zips open to lay flat and has a bunch of pockets inside to hold your knives. Sits nicely in the bottom of the cupboard and I get get it out easily and select what I want.

I have a large Spyderpac (holds 30 folders and has see through pockets), and use a Rubbermaid tub for the rest. For my fixed blades I use a smaller transparent Rubbermaid tub. Slides under the bed easily.

I keep a few in a valet box on my nightstand, a few more in a valet box on my dresser, a couple in my t-shirt drawer, and the rest in a Rubbermaid drawer.

vegasracer,

I like the avatar. I was a big fan of Pitt back in the day.

I store them all tip down in an open can of crisco. keeps them lubed and rust free too!

Most of my folders go in a old 8 drawer watch crystal case. Fixed blades go in a gun safe with shelves.

Hi oguruma -

I store my most used knives open on a shelf in an un-used room of the house.

The lesser used knives are in boxes or open in a dresser drawer.

I store the empty boxes of the users in another dresser drawer.

There is no room in the safes due to all the projectile-throwers in them. :D

best regards -

I recommend the spyderpac for folders. Holds lots of knives and allows you to see which one is in each pocket. For fixed blades I just store them in a couple file cabinet drawers.

I like the idea of storing a collection of knives in a Pelican Case. Depending on how many knives you currently own and how many more blades do you plan to acquire, Pelican Cases have a few size selections. Place the pelican case near my study.

Got one of these for Fathers Day from my wife and it works very well. The top compartment holds my longer fixed blades and you can get a lot of folders in the drawers. The top drawers on both sides have partitions running left to right and hold my various small folders and slippies very nicely. It's not bulletproof by any means but the locks will keep children out and it does put a good bit of my collection in one spot.

Saw an almost identical model, only difference was it was oak consturct, not sure what "hardwood" Harbor Freight uses but it was $300.00. For the money I've quite happy with this one and will likely add a second as my collection grows.

Something else to consider are blueprint file cabinets.

You can get these in either wood or steel. Been looking at local business auctions for used ones but haven't ran across any so far. Depending on the size/depth they would make decent storage for handguns as well. I've seen steel models that had bars that you locked in place across the drawer fronts with padlocks. Not as secure as a safe but they could be bolted to a couple of wall studs on top of a work bench or large dresser and would be fairly secure.
