How does the machax fare as a machete?

Like most I'm anxiously waiting its arrival. So much that I am trying to concoct a way of buying the old style to hold me over. But since I've never used one, and I've seen chopping pics and videos, I was wondering how it would stack up as a 'chete. since its the machete-ax, does it do well in both categories, or one more than the other? Owners and users speak up.

I've wondered this, too. There were machax (is that the plural of machax?) to play with at the gathering, and I really have come to regret not seizing the opportunity when I had it.

I can attest that it chops like the devil, as I witnessed several others hack away with one.

Never touched one but cant wait to.

My birthday is in January and I am all ready whispering Machax in my wife's ear as she sleeps every night.

Is there a projected release date/ price on these? I'd love to do a comparison to with my Zilla

I have not heard anything official. I am just hoping they come out in January with the other knives.

Well if you want to try one out, there is one for sale right now on these very forums.
If I had an extra $180 i'd buy it myself.

Clich, what machete typ duties are you wondering about exactly? The only reason I ask is that you can use most any blade for chores normally assigned for a different blade. I've used my machax for almost everything except blazing a jungle or tall grass. Actually it'd be my prior machax, my current hasn't seen any action since the gathering. I love the machax and can't wait for the Ka-Bar version.

Ill be hacking away at invasive thorn bushes that have overrun my deer trails

Im fighting off the urge. I keep telling myself its a sellers market for those right now.... the Ka-bars will be here in months at less then half that price I would expect.

Hahaha me too! I just asked my girl how much she loved me and then showed her this add.

Yea but you know that 2 years from now it will be a collector's item and it'll be like $300. Tell her it's an investment in your future!

I'm interested in what kind of chopper it is as well. I have never seen or held one so I have no point of reference. It has a very abrupt curve and looks a bit on the short side. Could just be the pics I have seen. I haven't even looked at the specs on it.

Yeah, it is a lot shorter than you would think(the knife) and a lot of people have commented about that. As a chopper, excellent. I used it at the gathering for the chopping contest. I didn't net tge fastest time, but it was pretty good. For thorn bush removal I'd say it'd be great to go through the base of the giant, but would think you'd need a little speed to get through individual vines or a cluster of branches. Derek and I were chatting the other day and I truly believe the machax could be my "one knife".

I agree Murphnuge. While it's a great chopper, up close to the handle is excellent for carving. You may have seen it before, but here is my thread, using only the Machax for prepping a friction fire hearth.

For those that haven't seen it before, this is a product review done by American Survival Guide way back when. It's what pushed me into buying one. You might have to use your zoom feature ......

It was designed to be the end all woods knife.

The story behind the Machax, is a creative one. Ethan sent some kukri's to Vietnam with some friends, the friends came back, and the kuks didn't. They were found lacking by all parties. So it, started. The first BKT creation. It was a combo of the Pack Machete/Survival Machete and Kukri knife. The angle was set to facilitate a snap cut, which, the BK4 does so well, and really bites. With a flick of the wrist, it will take green veg like it wasn't there. Then, came the effective recurve, for use as a draw knife, with the wider head, you have a place to get a good, solid grip.

As for other knife duties, you have a sweeping, long edge, that works well in just about every grip, except reverse. As a combat tool, well, use your imagination. With the wider flat of the front, you can dig, and its small enough to bore holes in wood, and the spine thickness lets it baton with ease.

Ethan's first creation, and one of the finest general use woods tools out there.

Evolution of the Machax, from right to left.

They say a picture tells a thousand words. Thanks for the history and the eye candy. That is so cool. You can actually see the evolution of the blade from right to left.

Thanks Doc C & Moose! I'm always eager for more info on the machax. It was my first BK&T, so it's probably my favorite!

I have what I consider a fairly good selection of decent choppers. I am very interested in seeing how it matches up to some of the ones I already have. This is looking more and more like a must have!

Most of my pics of my choppers are before they got a work out. Sorry for the beauty shots. :)
