How good are Boker knives ?

To keep it brief, I was looking to buy a Spyderco plain-edge Delica for use as an EDC, general purpose 'clip' knife but can I find one in Bangkok...can I heck !

The only place I can find a decent show of blades is a shop which is a Boker agent and distributor. They can get Spyderco's but it would take 2-3 months ! They only had one serrated Delica too and I definitely want a plain edge.

So, my questions are ...

Are Bokers as good as Spydercos in terms of blade/handle material and reliability ?

Which Boker model is comparable to a Delica ?

Does anyone know of other knife retailers/suppliers in Thailand/Bangkok ?(longshot I know ;) )

This will be my first folder purchase.

Thanks for your advice.

When I worked in a knife shop, we carried some Bokers. The slip-joint knives were very nice and well put together. As for their modern designs, I have rarely seen one that I would pay money for. I did buy a Top-Lock when they first came out....talk about let-down.

My wife went on a business trip a few years ago, and came across a Boker Super-Liner (I think thats what they were called). It cost more than twice what a Delica costs, and the Delica is still 3 times the knife the Boker is. The Boker lock is very thin, travels all the way across the blade and is not a tight lock-up at all. Overall the quality on the entire knife is below average.

If you like slip-joints, Bokers are fine. Anything else, and you would probably be better off waiting on a Spyderco...maybe you could get one quicker from one of the dealers here.

Tardis - try posting the question at the Asian and Australian Knife Community, I may not know where to buy Spyderco Delica but I think some of the knife nuts in Asia will know.

...and most of what they sell is 'above average' in quality, especially the the knives they have made in Japan...

But, because of the way they do business, I have a very hard time giving them any of my cash...

As to the Delica/Endura series, as a 8, going on 9, year 'believer', I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better knife for the money.

I believe that almost all Bokers use 440C steels while Spydercos use more modern alloys. Also, look into Columbia River Knife and Tool Knives as they also make excellent knives at real bargain rates.

I would have to agree with what's been said already. Boker is very hit-and-miss as far as quality. I think the better value is in their cheaper slip joints, and other small folders. They do have great quality in their fixed blades, but I'd stay away from their "modern" style folders, especially the more expensive ones. I've owned several of the Skywalker knives, and I've sent them all back to the factory for bad Quality Control issues. The Klotzli collaborations are quite nice, though, but a little overpriced.

The only knives I would buy would be their slip joints, fixed blades, or Ceramic bladed knives.

I have some BOKER knives and my advice would be to stay with SPYDERCO Delica, especially in lightweight knife category.
Try to check out American on-line dealers, some of them sell also overseas.

Thanks for all your suggestions and replies. I'm gonna go the Delica route for sure. Now just got to find one online or otherwise.

tardis, you should try ordering via the Internet - get reccomendations of online shops on BF. get two knives at least (say, about US$100 worth), then your shipping costs will be reasonable. or get a Delica n the Sharpmaker 204 (heck, you have an obligation to keep your knives sharp ;) ). A Delica n sharpmaker should cost you about US$125, including shipping.

The Delica is in a class of its own. I have a SE version - it's a bomb. Bigger cutting power than it looks.
