I use AVG, and it normally runs 2.5 hours for a full sweep....

This sound about right??

My AVG full scan takes more in the range of 30 minutes. I'm just guessing. But its closer to 30 minutes than your 150 minutes. I'm sure that many things go into it, like processor speed and what you have running in the background. And how much you have to scan.

There can not be an equivalent time period unless it is versus the exact same machine, with the exact same files loaded in the exact same sectors.

If you have a ton of files (photos, movies) it will take much longer than a machine that just is used to buy Busse knives.

For your machine, if you frequently deleat temp files, deleate your trash can, and the other basic maint. steps you can decrease your scan times.

I have a bunch of files on my machine, it takes about the same time...but is a different scanner and obviously different items to scan.

AVG seems to take about 1.5 hours to do the full sweep. The free Adaware takes about 25 minutes or so.

A full AVG scan takes me about 30 minutes. At present, I'm using 101 gigs of my 250 gig hard drive.
It takes longer to go through all my game files; though this is likely overkill. I imagine it's possible for some sort of malware to reside in your game files, but it must be rare.

I keep everything defragged, and only run a full scan monthly or so.

As others have said it depends on how much there is to scan (disk size/usage), processor speed etc.

Fortunately Tom's Hardware has a benchmark using a whole bunch of processors one of which was - AVG Anti Virus 7.5.467 Scan: Vista Enterprise (Windows folder) 8 GB.

For that, it varied from as low as 59 secs for the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 to 174 secs for the AMD Sempron 64 2800+ (the link given above goes to that chart) - remember this was for an 8Gb Vista folder.

I don't know how this would scale up for a complete system -
but I have a Sempron 64 3100+; 512Mb RAM; 100Gb (NTFS - with 66Gb used +RECOVERY section 4.75Gb FAT32, used: 2Gb); 20Gb (FAT32 - with 7Gb used) Windows XP-SP2 -and on AVG 7.5 it takes about 2 hours for full scan.
Guesstimate: my processor would be about 162 secs on that chart-
so the scaling factor for my system was about 45x.
