How Many knife Handles in THAT?!

It's about the size of the one I just cut up. I figure maybe 100 after drying, waste, and tossing the least figured stuff. All depends on what it looks like inside. Some of them are extremely underwhelming.

I'd agree pretty much with what kuraki said, but would say "at least", again depending on how solid it is. I got about 400 blocks from the tree I cut up that was about the same size, if I remember, and about 1/3 was the burl.

I'd also say that burl may be underwhelming. In my limited but moderate experience cutting up trees looking for handle wood, the burl needs shoots growing out of it and sprouting each year to give the "eyes" and yield a decent looking burl for handles.

Lapedog may have the right idea for that burl because the grain will most likely be swirled.

A lot of truth in that, unfortunately. Not that anyone will ever know about that particular tree, I doubt Biltmore will ever let it be touched.
On another note, wood prices are starting to rise. I stopped in my local Woodcraft two days ago and was very surprised at some of the prices compared to just two months ago. Used to get 2x2x12's for around $10 depending on type of wood. Some pieces are now $58.

Some years back we were out fixing fence on the ranch. Found this old guy. Spent quite a bit of time cutting this sucker up and only got two small handles out of it. Pretty rotten and spunky on the inside.

Dan, you do realize that your tree looks a bit pornographic, right? LOL

3 x 3/8 x 24 piece of cocobolo is $56 at Woodcraft. Some of it is not so great and has sapwood on the edges. That is the same price that they charged me few months ago for a 6 x 6 x 3+ "leftover" cocobolo bowl turning blank with some pretty cool swirly figure.

Man, gotta hate when that happens, but make a person appreciate a trophy piece when it is found!

:( I just saw real wood ;)

I was getting some decent gaboon ebony for $10-11 each in the size mentioned above. Now it's $58 and looks like crap. Asked the guy at the counter what was up, said they may have misspriced it before. Wish I'd pick up more earlier..., .

Yeah. Years ago I got two huge curly maple bowl blanks that had the piece of the log been a little bigger, it would have gotten snapped up by luthiers and I paid pretty much regular bowl blank price. Same with a couple of big 2-3 inch square pieces of jet black instrument grade blackwood and a 2 x 2 x 18 stick of flawless amboyna burl. I think that I paid like $150 for that one at it was the priciest of the bunch.

This happened in my area about a year ago. Prices for exotics was $30-50\bf, but have now jumped to $100-200\bf. They said it was cites related, but ben at Greenberg checked it out, and it was BS.

Paradoilia is strong in this one! How many different ways it could be pornographic? I see four different scenes, but one involves an alien turtle.

Have you seen the Florida state capitol building?

Not to derail the very interesting place this thread is going (it's early and I can't think of anything funny.) Is there any basic way to know if you found something good? A friend has a oak (he thinks) that he cut down that is hollow but there is a 3' high scar on the tree that is 2-3" thick. Is it worth a few hours of work?

The price jump where I am in Canada happened about a year ago. Cocobolo is now $110/ board foot. This is triple what it was a year ago, and all of their stock had far poorer grain than the boards I initially bought. The first batch had wonderful pinstripe grain and lots of red orange brown and black. The new stuff has less color variation and wider growth rings. Very underwhelming.
