I've found a local seller who has a sog tech 1 for sale, and I really want it. it's supposedly brand new with a leather sheet.

I will not tell you what the seller want for it right now, I'd like too hear what you think it's worth, and how much is too much for this beauty.

Mine cost £100, unused old stock
I'd have paid maybe 20 percent more, I think on SOG collectors forum all the old Jap stuff seems to have risen in value
That's a lot less than a Hattori is going to cost you though ...................

Wel if its a VINTAGE Tech I with leather sheath it should SAY on th sheath and blade S.M.C.A under the sog logo or E.D.W.A(something like that)..

If thats what it says WITH NO BOX I would pay up to 200$ for it.. If it had a BOX I would be 250-275.. If it does not say SMCA or EDWA, then drop 25$ from the price

Such things aren't always about "monetary value." The Tech I's (and Tech II's) are fantastically awesome knives. The handle material is really nice. The balance is really nice. The looks are really nice. The steel is really nice. I have 1 of each and they are on my never-ever sell list.

My very opinionated opinion: do the deal. If you need to think "cost" then amortize a daily cost over the next 30 years. Up-front cost may seem steep, but if you think daily cost, then the buy-it decision is easy.

I'll pontificate a little, philosophically speaking, from my user's standpoint. Some knives are rare and worth the money. I got lucky today on a 'bay thing and scored an old Western 8"-blade-length fighting knife. Surprisingly good shape for the price paid. The leather sheath is really old, not original, barely serviceable to keep fingers off of sharp edge. All in all, I couldn't care about the sheath. The Western itself is a relatively rare "timeless classic" knife and I was lucky to get it.

I feel the same way about the SOG Tech I (and Tech II). Nuts to sheath or box, they don't cut, they are simply a hanger-on ..... if you can score a real-deal Tech I knife at a price you are willing to pay, or even a few bucks beyond your price pain threshold, I'd say do the deal.
A while back I bought either a Tech I or a Tech II, without sheath, and I was thrilled to even find one, and twice as thrilled it was affordable and not priced way beyond my price pain threshold. And a short while after that I lucked into a genuine SOG sheath to fit the knife. Patience and luck sometimes gets you where you want to be.

Cheers,

Carl

Nice blade Carl! Looks just like mine with a convex edge.. I seen TECH II's with convex and the other type of edge.. I like em both but the convex edge is my preference..

I would really like to buy a TECH I and a NITE TECH.... I finally got my midnight tigershark(u remember with a blunt tip), but the alocal KNIFE maker fixed it and u cant tell.. hell i even put it side by side with my other two tigersharks and they look the same size;o)

I should get sent to my very soon.

are there any special thinks I need to know, so that I don't ruin this knife.

best method for sharpening?

dax,
I just happen to have a Nite Tech ...... 6 years ago, right place, right time, right question asked, a price I was willing to pay, and cash on hand. It is quite beat up, it was a soldier's knife and used often. One of my favorites.

sogflash,
"ruin" ?? Just common knife sense will keep it safe: don't chop granite, don't use it to pry off hubcaps, don't poke around in electrical junction boxes ..... that sort of thing.

Sharpening. I am sharpening challenged. So I use a $5 Smith's handheld plastic thingie with the fixed-angle carbide cutters. I drag & scrape the edge across the cutters to get "an edge." Then I strop the daylights out of it on a leather-covered mouse pad, said pad well-covered with green micro-fine honing compound. My simple system works great on all my SOG's, and other brands too. Hair-popping sharp, very easily deforests my forearms.

Cheers,

Carl

it's mine for EVER!

Keep it, use it and enjoy it. I had one that I sold last summer to go back to school. Liked it, but thought the blade could be longer so if I get another one I'm going to get the Tech II. :) Keep us posted!!

I just got it! I might take some pictures of it if I can get my camera working, if pictures are wanted.

I remember trying to sell my Tech I some years ago. Absolutely no interest from anyone. I would like to thank all those that weren't interested. Glad it didn't sell and I still have it.;)

sogflash and JohnnyO,

Cheers,

Carl

Haha when I first saw the Tech/Tech II, I was like "Dang! What a beauty! Got to get one of those!". Happened to be the first Seki Japan SOG knife I got. Really loved the combination of colors - black gold and silver!

Sorry NPH, No longer interested in selling it. Keeping posting a Want to Buy ad and someone will eventually come though. The same thing happened with my SOG Jet Edge II. Tried selling with no interest. Just left it in my dresser drawer. One day, maybe a year or more later, some posted a Want to Buy on that knife. I contacted them and sold it. Two happy people.
