I got to wandering about how offer I sharpen my personal knives. I have a couple of folders one never gets used for anything. I stays razor sharp all the time. I have a SOG Flash II that I use to carry all the time but has become my knife I clip in my pocket when exercising. It's really light. I have an old gerber gator that stays in my truck glove box. It's really sharp it usually only gets used if I forget my pocket knife which is rare. If I do I'll usually grab the gerber and stick it in my pocket. Lastly my Cold Steel Recon 1 is my EDC right now and has been for a few years. It's kind of large but it fits my hand well and appears to be very sturdy. Of all the knives I have purchased the cold steel was the second sharpest in my opinion second to my benchmade butterfly knife. Which never gets used I got tired of cutting my self playing with it. I think in the past 3 or so years that I have had this cold steel pocket knife I've only sharpend it 2 maybe 3 times. From the factory all I did was touch up the edge. I'm reading about people saying they are stropping or sharpening there knives a few times a month some times every week. What are you using your knives for? I'm not talking about kitchen knives hunting knives fishing knives. I'm talking about your EDC pocket folder. My hunting/skinning knives get sharpend a few times during the season. I hate skinning with a knife that is not nuts sharp. I sharpen my fishing knives as needed. My kitchen knives get sharpend a lot. Use to be a lot more until I realized the kids where doing things like slicing there sandwiches with the butcher knife on a ceramic plate! Gerrr I stopped that real quick. Anyway how often do you sharpen your knives?

When they need it like any other knife.

There are so many variables as far as who is cutting, what you are cutting etc. When you feel a drag in the cut or see yourself using more pressure for a cut its time.

Only when stropping won't bring it back to whisper cutting paper or shaving the hair on the back of my hand. Then onlyminimal strokes on the stone.

you sharpen it when it needs sharpening, otherwise you end up with a toothpick and not a knife.

About once every week with average edc use, but that varies. Could be once a week or once a month. Kitchen knives really need sharpened weekly even with light use but I just never feel up to sharpening a whole block of knives constantly.

I sharpen all my kitchen knives about twice a year. Full sharpening on the EdgePro. About once a month I give the users 3-4 swipes on the Sharpmaker fine stones, and use a borosillicate glass rod before every use.

My EDC folder (a Benchmade 710 axis-lock) gets sharpened on the EdgePro 2-3 times a year, touched up on a sharpmaker stone (without the sharpmaker base) 3-4 times a year, and stropped either every week, or if used, stropped right afterwards.

Hunting knives get sharpened just before season, touched up on smooth steel if needed between field dressings.
Fishing knives get sharpened as needed.

Every time im done cutting something. I use whatever type of touch up it takes to bring the edge to at at least paper slicing.
