Mineral oil. Can be had at most any drug store type places. Pour some in a tall glass and submerge handle for a period of time. Time I suppose depends on situation and raw materials but I often just do it over night myself. Others will chime in with more detailed specifics based on their experiences.
Oil will saturate the stag, discolor and soften it-especially if used repeatedly.
My suggestion is to occasionally give it a good coating/buffing with paste wax or neutral paste shoe polish.
Let me qualify my statement.
Most of my business is restoring old pocket knives. I have been doing it for about 50 years. I have seen more oil-soaked stag than you can imagine.
