How to Clean a Vintage Kitchen Knife

I'm a newbie to knives, so be patient with me. I just purchased what appears to be a vintage Gustav Emil Ern kitchen knife in an estate sale. It's in pretty good shape, with some patina and what appears to be random etching (natural or not?) with numerous small spots and streaks. I'd like to make it look a bit better without hurting the value. Any suggestions? Thanks.

We would need some pictures to figure out what work needs to be done. Did you want to remove the patina, put a new handle on it...?

Will try to send some photos later (need to charge camera battery). Patina is OK, but there is some rust near the handle. Is the "natural etching" desirable? The pits and streaks are almost microscopic and are fairly evenly distributed. The wooden handle is in good shape, but could use some cleaning to improve appearance. (It's not dry. The grain of the wood may have been filled over time and use with natural fats and oils. It feels sort of waxy and has a gray color. My thought is to go over the blade and handle with fine steel wool, then oil the handle with Danish oil and the blade with cooking oil to discourage rust. I know that with vintage furniture it's often a trade-off between making them look good, and preserving the original finish, patina, etc. Re-finishing almost always decreases the value, but sometimes is the best route, depending on condition, value, and planned usage. I presume it's similar with old knives.

Shotguns point about pictures being helpful is true.

Still, You can safely use a pencil eraser or similar kind of eraser that's used in industry to remove the rust spots, Then use scotchbrite pads for any other area you wish to clean.

That and a good sharpening and you should be ready to go.

Thanks! The pencil eraser works pretty well. Scotch brite pad seems to remove patina, but I've been reading about restoring it using a lemon. May clean thoroughly, then try that.
