Hey all,

After peoples suggestions and testing it out myself I've definitely found that hacksaw blades are the best for getting a spark off a metal match.

Now the only problem is that they are far too large, so what is the best way to cut the hacksaw blade into smaller pieces? I was also wondering if you guys wrap the blade in anything to prevent yourself from getting cut by it when its being transported?

Thank you!

You can cut hacksaw blades or any hardened steel with those cut off wheels that go in rotary tools.

Put it in a vise, wrap a rag around it and snap it off. or use a bench grinder to score one side then snap it at the score. newer bi metal blades can be hard to snap if not scored as the spine is spring tempered and the teeth are hardened up. The HSS Starrett blades are great but touchy to snap too.

Yeah, I just break them. Though I dont use them anymore, so its not a big deal. :D

has anyone succeeded in drilling through a HSS blade with non carbide bits? I do not have a grinding wheel or angle grinder. any other way to cut it?actually i am referring to a power hacksaw blade

I just used two pairs of pliers and bent them back and forth until they snapped. I covered the rough edges with a little electrical tape.

I use tin snips. Very easy. Oh, and I use the cheap carbon steel blades that are usually 3-4 for $1.

I sand the corners and edges to smooth things out and expose the steel from under the blade coating. I then use the Rotozip with a cylindrical grinding stone to put a flat edge on the top of the blade, and maybe round the corners slightly. Lastly I drill a 1/8" hole in one end and attached a paracord loop.

Try your local dollar store, too. I found a pack of about 20 in their hardware section (for $1..).

But like they said, just bend over and over, they break easily.

You can easily cut a hacksaw blade with a hacksaw blade.

I found some small files that make great strikers and they are easy to snap to length. You get a small file too. Rather than trying to drill one, I made a partial wrap of paracord to make a lanyard hanger.
