How to Open Strider SNG Pivot without Proprietary Tool

Hi guys,

So, I would like to find a cheap tool to use on my Strider pivot, as currently I cannot open the pivot because the proprietary lock side spins freely when I try to unscrew it. I had read in an earlier post that the shimano spin doctor chainring nut tool would work (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1030378_-1___), though I wanted to check that with you guys before buying. It seems that I might have to remove the middle portion of that tool in order for it to work on my knife, and I currently do not own a dremel tool and have a limited means of modifying any metal objects. If no other methods are available, I'm wondering if any of you kind souls might be willing to sell me a cheap rigged up tool?

Thank you!

Parks Chainring Nut Wrench will work
I personally like the PSD tool made for Striders & Striders & Hinderer

That chainring nut wrench also has the middle portion that looks as though it will have to be removed; is this not so?

Yea, I just can't bring myself to buy the PSD tool at $65.

Edit: looks like you can find the PSD at $32, but I'm still reluctant to spend that kinda money on the tool.

I just bought a Strider pivot tool on ebay for $18.00. The seller still has some left.

The easiest way to open any pivot that freely spins without a special tool is to just grip the blade tightly in the closed position, applying pressure to the spine of the blade - almost as if you're pushing the blade 'further inwards' in the closed position.

This will lock the pivot screw in position and you will be able to easily unscrew the pivot screw.

I was really hoping that would work, but the pivot is still spinning.

Damn that sucks. It must be drenched in loctite then. Have you tried using a hairdryer or soldering iron to heat it up to break the loctite?

Actually, the male side of the pivot was previously wrapped in teflon tape, and I was actually able to unscrew the pivot fairly easily with just the pressure of my thumb against the proprietary side. I then applied loctite after a fluff and buff of the internals, and seconds after screwing the pivot together, I couldn't unscrew it again. It's as if I screwed it one or two turns too far, and it passed the threshold upon where the proprietary screw is necessary. I was trying to improve the action, and now it's just tight again. The knife is gorgeous and wonderful in so many ways, I just wish it were a shade smoother.

You can get creative and use a pair of snap ring pliers. It works for hinderers too. And also snap rings.

I made these for my hinderer's. Works great and only costs pennies!
