Hello!
I'll try and keep this short
So I'm finishing a new Hinderer build centered around Vintage Gunmetal (steel flame) and I want to find a way to make the stainless steel hardware (17-4 stainless) have a Gunmetal look. Acidwashed isn't the tone I'm going for so thats not an option
I figured someone here might have tried Gunmetal hardware before so I thought I'd ask
I'd like to achieve something similar to this zoomed photo attached. Specifically the center were you see the dark and light kinda together. So not just straight black like some gunmetal finishes
If you have any ideas I'm all ears! I'm sure doing something like this is possible I'm just not sure how
Thanks!

Stainless steel won't take on "gun blue" finish unfortunately,... only carbon steels, but it can be heated to turn blue to gold to dark brown with a torch, this will also make the parts brittle but harden

A quick dip in ferric chloride will darken
Stainless steel followed by a buffing.

But it will not be as dark as the color your posting.

Other option is Norrells Moly resin or KG guncoat.

Caswell Plating has a gel kit that might work. I believe that Hinderer and Steel Flame use a plating or coating company for their dark stainless hardware, that would account for that translucent effect.
