  I'm working on a bust dagger with mokume bolsters and pearl handles. The stones do not have eye appeal set in the bolsters but look good in the pearl. Question is how to attach the gold settings to the pearl. I'm going to have to stop doing this stuff it gives me a headace.

I want to know this also
Otherwise jewelery making books tell how to do this if you can understand them.

Try contacting Don Cowles:

He insets stones into bolsters and blades. I think he uses little press fit 3mm stones with a gold ring already around them. The ring is split, but when you press them into the right sized hole, the ring squeezes up and holds the stone in place.

If you're planning on setting 'em flush in the metal, you could drill through the pearl and set a rivet there, and then set the stone flush in the head of the rivet. It might help to ask your friendly neighborhood jeweler or someone who's done something like that before, or you could try your hand at setting them yourself. This page from the ganoksin project's website has some basic info on flush setting. The Orchid forum at ganoksin.com is a great place to meet with jewelers and decorative metalworking enthusiasts of all stripes.

I reckon there are a number of creative ways you could work gems into your handle. If the stone is big enough, you could build a backed bezel and rivet that into an inset on your pearl handle, then set the stone in the bezel.

Hope this helps,

I bezel set the stones in gold, drill the pearl to fit the bezel, and glue the whole thing in the hole.Sometimes I thread the inside of the bezed tubing and screw it onto a stud. The thumb stud with sapphire and the diamonds set in the MOP are done this way.

what I use is called presets
I get them from Signity 1-866-221-8234 frank cardoon for the genuine stones in NY
I use rubies and Diamonds. if you go this way get the seting step drill bit.

Kim,
I may be off track here but what if you drill a hole in the handle material. Big enough to slide a tube in. Fit the handle with the tube sort of "Rivited" between the handle material and the tang(assuming its a full flat tang knife). Then use the tube that sticks above the pearl to roundover ontop of the stones.
Oh hell....I dont know what I am talking about :D Just a thought.

Hey wait... pre make the stone/ setting on a rod that the setting is soldered onto. So you end up with a pin that has a stone on one end. Then just cut the rod to fit and glue it in place.

Thank you. So many great ideas except for Jerrys, you old fart. Its amazing what you will do for money........

Yeah, well I might be an old fart but I don't make jeweled bust daggers... :D

Do your old Special Forces buddies know about this?
