Man its been a rough couple of months, the heat, a sick family member, so today I decided to get some pictures of my new to me anvil, it weights 475lbs, but cant make out the name at all. What leads me to believe its a trenton or a arm and hammer is it has a huge oval under the bottom of it, the top is in what I consider excellent condition with a few minor dings here and there, its ring is extremely loud, got alot of rebound, enjoy

Nice! It's the little things that make life worth living :D

By oval do you mean under the base is a concave depression?

Charlie, when i come down I can tell you for sure. The Trentons (what ive been using for 12 years) has the word TRENTON in a Oval shape, with the N sometimes appearing as an X on later models. The Tentons were forged anvils, if you take that chain off you can actually see some hammer marks if its a Trenton, the marks will look they used a hammer with a square die to form the base.

If its an arm/hammer, it may or may not have those marks, some of the Arm/hammers were cast, some forged.

My guess at just viewing the photos is that its a Trenton, as they were marked VERY lightly in most cases. The Arm/hammers usually had a deeper and more legible mark.

later, matt

Matt, on my Trenton it (the logo) is in an elongated diamond.

I love big anvils, that's a beast. Congrats!

Arm & Hammers are known to have a particularly loud ring, and also typically have a very skinny waist. Oftentimes you'll also be able to see a seam at the waist where the base and top were forged together. Lastle, if it's an Arm & Hammer, you'll probably also be able to see several "steps" underneath the heel from where it was forged out.

Thank all you guys very much for the nice comments, Look forward to you coming Matt as soon as I get my dies for the 25, It took 2 years to get this anvil. I dont know why I wanted it so bad? almost impossible to move, but now if feels like Ive beat a video game Ive been playing for 2 years, I finally found the BIG ONE, and its all mine,LOL

We have a 100 pound Arm & Hammer that is practically unused. Its rings like church bells. Its a forged anvil, if you turn over the heel and horn there are forge marks from the drop hammers. Every real Arm & Hammer Ive personally seen is forged. Mine has the logo and weight right on the side, very clear.

Hey Charlie buddy, you can take the chain off it, No one's going to pick it up and run away with it lol :p:p:p

not all of the Arm/Hammers were forged, there are cast ones out there, ive seen a couple... my cousin had a 250 that looked new just rusting away in his yard.... wouldnt sell it to me for nothing.

Sam your right, i looked at my Trenton its also a diamond shape with the N being an X on mine forming the center of the daimond.

The Trenton will also have the forged "steps" on the base.

Cant wait to see this one Charlie, and that LG 25 too!
