Hultafors classic hunting axe vs classic felling axe

Good morning everyone,

I'm very curious as I know the heads on the classic felling axe and hunters axe are the same weight but what are differences between the two (other than handle lenght)? I'm trying to decided between both. I plan to use it camping and to clear trails for hunting. I also want it for felling smaller trees to make bow staves.*

I found the classic hunters axe on Amazon.ca almost $30 (+ free shipping) cheaper than the felling axe. If you think the felling axe will better suit my needs I'll wait till I can get the same deal on it or grab the Husqvarna multi-purpose for under $100 shipped.

Also does anyone know the difference between the classic line and standard line? I know the standard line doesn't come with a sheath but other than that I'm curious if the price difference (over twice as much) is worth it going classic.

Thanks,*
W. M.

If head weight is the same and head/blade profile also (that should be easy enough to compare) then handle length presumably is what determines 'hunter' vs 'felling'. A lad with a backpack and a rifle over his shoulder is not going to want as long a handle or as big a package as does someone whose sole intent is chopping down a tree.

I wasn't %100 sure if the profile is the same. Have you seen the two in person? I was also curious if the poll had rounded edges for skinning? I have a base camp I can leave the axe there and I'll do the vast majority of trail work in the spring/ summer so I'm not worried about it when bow hunting.

Thanks

It seems a lot of issues with rehafting some of these axes. Even the vintage ones had over size eyes but I have heard eye widths of over one inch on some of these. Not sure if it is all of them or just some models. It won't be an issue if you are happy with the length of haft that they come with and you never break a handle. I like the flexibility of standard size eyes and easy(inexpensive) replacement handles. Just something to consider.

Sorry, it was not my intent to enter this discussion as a potential customer. I don't have any aspirations of buying any of these because vintage tools are considerably less expensive and are equally or better made, and can be inexpensively 'doctored' to your heart's content. To address the question about rounded poll edges; myself have managed to skin quite a few geese and furbearers and dressed numerous deer, two moose and a caribou over the years without want of an axe-type blade. A small pruning saw will effortlessly open up a ribcage, buzz through a few legs or bones, or get irritating bird wings well out of the way.

Good afternoon,
Has anyone compared these two axes side by side? I'm just trying to figure out the differences to compare them to the price difference. I know I don't really need the rounded poll for skinning but I can live with the poll having rounded edges. That way I can use the axe as a hammer if need be.

If that's the only difference I think I'll get the classic hunter has I don't think I'll miss the extra 6 inches. From what I've read and seen from reviews the mask and finish on the hultafors is better than the husqvarna multipurpose. I think that justifies the $10+ more even with it being 6 inches smaller.

Anymore think I need the longer classic axe and should wait to find it for a better deal?

Thanks

I suggest you contact the retailer or the manufacturer, as no one seems to have seen them side by side, 'round these parts at least.

What's the poll look like? What do you use yours for? Have you ever wished it had the 26" haft? Have you seen the head on the felling axe to compare?

Thanks

The edges of the poll are machined / beveled. I can get some better photos when im home tonight but this is the only one iv currently got on hand that you can see it in. added a second pic just because :)

As far as im aware, the head on the felling axe is the same but may be heads that are not quite as perfect due to them going on the cheaper axe, (i.e maybe they put the really well formed heads on the classics and the not so perfect ones on the cheaper line, im only speculating here). and the heads of the felling axes are painted or covered in something. and I don't think they come with a sheath?

Have not wanted a 26" haft on it. IMO its a good length for what it is. Can be used either one handed or two handed.

one thing I will say is that I do like the sheath on this axe. Its better than the wetterlings one for example as the mask covers the top of the haft. So when you sit it down on a hard surface the top of the handle that sticks out of the axe head is protected and will not get deformed. Also since its got a leather cord to tighten it, if it ever broke you could replace it with any piece of sting or whatever you had handy.

I got it to be a camp axe / to take hunting, that was heavy enough to do some work, but light enough for me to pack all day if I wanted to. (hunting here consists of packing everything on your back.. tents, axes, food etc etc). we dont have those tree stands that you can just drive up to like I see in other countries. You can only take what you can carry, and you need to carry it far..to get to somewhere to make a base camp... then depending on where/ the situation id either leave it at base camp, or pack it on my back during the days hunting

Good afternoon,

Thanks for the reply and all the info. I really appreciate that. I'm pretty sure the classic hunters axe will be my next purchase.

I read somewhere that there is a difference in steel between the standard and classic line but I can't remember where I saw it. I also think there is a difference in ths finish. You're probably right about them being apprentice heads. That was always my thought/ opinion on the husqy heads too.

I also plan on doing hiking/canoe trips with the wife and kids when their older so this will prefect for those trips too. By the time they're ready I should have all the needed gear. One Christmas, father's day and birthday present at a time lol

More pics of this fine axe would always be appreciated, just saying!

Thanks again
