Hydro Dipping?

I ran across a process of applying custom designs to items such as guns stocks called hydro dipping. How durable is the coating and would this work for items such as knife handles?

Example of the process involved

It's been done before. Benchmade used to have a Griptilian with RealTree AP camo, and it was applied with hydrographic printing/dipping. The finish holds up just fine as long as it has the proper clear coat applied (automotive grade).

Done properly, it holds up very well. A good clear coat is the trick to making it durable. Its used extensively in the archery industry as well. Any bow in camo is hydro dipped.
