Hey everyone,

I am looking for a "tactical" knife (the reason I put it in quotes is because I am looking for a cool knife primarily used for self defense, but I am just going to put it in my collection).

The following knives are my top choices:

Spyderco Civilian
Spyderco Citadel 92mm
Benchmade Reflex
Benchmade Auto Axis
Emerson CQC8
Bradley Alias 1 Auto
Protech Brend 3
Protech Godfather
Protech TR3
Sog Tac Auto
Piranha Bodyguard

Which one would you guys recommend? What other knives would you guys suggest?

Thanks,

Ben

If you're just going to put it in your collection, get whatever you like best.

If you get one of the autos, though, don't get caught with it outside your house.

autos arent that great inmop, at least buy something you can legally carry every now and then if you feel like. a regular bradley alias 1 is an awesome knife, and you could carry it legally in ca if you wanted to. the civilian is also really nice. spyderco police 3, military and chinook 3 are worth looking at too.

there is also the crkt hissatsu folder, its an assisted opener so it would be legal to carry.

If you're not going to use it CRKT M16-14SFG.

If you are, see above.

I think It's a Scary Bit of Gear.

Maybe not the best quality(to you).

But I think It would leave a massive wound in a SD moment.

Spyderco civilian, I like alot, but slashing weapon only........ not my idea of tactical.

If you not gonna use it, why pay top dollar?. :)

Thanks for all the great responses so far. I believe I confused people about the use of the knife. It is not that I will never use it, it is just that I don't normally need a self defense knife. However, if I ever do decide to carry it for a self defense purpose I want to know it will not let me down. This knife needs no edc ability at all, if it did I would just be an added bonus. Most days I carry a RAT Izula around my neck, CRK large Sebenza 21 clipped to my front right pocket, a Spyderco Pacific Salt SE clipped to my back right pocket, and either a Swiss Champ, or a Leatherman Surge on my belt or in my pocket. So edc is pretty much taken care of for me.

Thanks

Ben

So is self defense, then, if you plan on using a knife for that.

Since the dedicated SD knife thing is really a novelty anyway since you carry 3 folding knives and a fixed blade on your person every day, get the one that you like the most.

Of course, if you decided to carry it, you'd then be carrying 5 knives.

Using a knife for self defense is a sure way to get yourself injured, Knives are not a self defense weapon, you have to get too close to your opponent.

I have been drooling over those Protech godfathers ever since I first saw 'em.

Probably not the best knife to be caught with, the risk of confiscation is high.

Are they assisted opening or fully auto? I am not really sure, but assume assisted.

Imagine passing a protech godfather down through your family, they would never forget you.

Well said, George. The chances of you ever using a knife for self defense are slim to none and even if you did you'd more than likely be cut up as much, or more than, your opponent.

Every time I see a post like this I just have to wonder. I know a lot of knives are marketed as SD knives but they never mention you have to be in close to do the work and they never mention you are probably going to get cut up too.
If you are really worried about SD then get that Concealed Carry permit.
Good luck to you on picking the right knife.

um...if i bought a knife for SD, i think common sense would tell me its a close range weapon:rolleyes:
heres how i look at it. all these people who say a knife is useless in a SD situation, lets see what they say when 4-5 people have em on the ground kicking the crap outta em and beating them with a baseball bat. is that situation going to happen every day? no, but if it does, i think one would appreciate a "useless novelty tactical knife". btw, i was nearly in a situation like that, 2 guys came after me with a baseball bat at a gas station, for no reason. i jumped in my car and hulled tail, and would have done the same whether i was armed or not. but i cant help but think what would have happened if i hadnt gotten to my car in time...
now to address the OP question, i am looking at getting a knife for SD, and the cold steel voyager XL tanto and the spyderco police g10 are what considering.

Civillian for practical SD carry. And it looks cool.

If you're looking for an OTF keep in mind they cost between $200-400 and I'd be rather picky about who I stabbed with a $300 knife, possibly gunking up the spring assembly.

The most impressive folder I have handled thus far is the Zero Tolerance ZT0300. I bought it based on reviews and recommendations and when I finally received it, I was all giddy and couldn't stop giggling with excitement. I felt like a 6-year old at Christmas. I know, pretty pathetic, but it is that awe-inspiring. Check it out.

I have a ZT 0400 arriving tomorrow. Nasty looking blade shape, AO, and made by ZT; you should give it a look.

I'd go for the Emerson CQC-8 out of that list.

on YOUR list - Benchmade Reflex

there's no 710 on your list, that's what i would suggest (as far as folders go). my buddy bought the full size Benchmade auto. i showed him my 710. after his auto got stolen, he replaced it with a 710.

the ability to open AND CLOSE with one hand is just something autos don't have.

It sounds to me like you just want something cool for the collection. Assuming that, I'd get the Civilian because I happen to think it's really cool and have one myself.
