Greetings,
I really like my Spyderco McBee, so I decided to try another design by Jonathan McNees. This is a midtech flipper done by McNees.
Here are some stats:
540.00 @BHQ
Overall Length:7.625"
Blade Length:3.25"
Cutting Edge:3.125"
Blade Width:1.25"
Blade Thickness:0.18"
Blade Material:CPM-154
Blade Style:Clip Point
Blade Grind:Hollow

Pros: 1. Very solid feeling. Feels really well made.
2. Produces a satisfiable Twack when flipping.
3. Very cool looking. Great size.

Cons: I have some worries about the knife.

a. In the pictures, you can tell that the blade wasn't sharpened all the way up to the choil. There is still remnants of stonewash left there and it is dull near the choil.
b. I am not sure what is going on with the sharpening at the tip. I am not sure if that is normal, but the angle at the tip is very different than the rest of the blade.
c. The lock bar locks up around 60%. However, when I grab the knife to cut things, the lock bar goes all the way to 100% and gets stuck- requiring 2 hands and a bit of force to move.
d. The stonewash was after the logo placement. Therefore, you can't see the logo or the blade steel type unless you shine a flashlight on the knife. I know you can see CPM 154 in the pictures, but you can't see the logo or the blade steel markers without a flashlight. No biggie. Just seems weird. It has the feel of a high-quality knife with the look of a no-name gas station knife.

I am really bummed about the lockbar going all the way to 100% and getting stuck. I have owned many framelock knives and I have never encountered this problem.
I am kind of underwhelmed and I think I am going to return it for something else at Blade HQ.

**Does anyone know if I have to pay the restocking fee if I get a different knife than the one originally purchased?
** Is the tip supposed to be at a different angle like that?

Thanks,

Welcome to the world of custom knives.

When it comes to being a knife hobbyist nothing has disappointed me so much as learning that more often than not expensive customs are often of lower quality than less expensive production knives. There's the totally natural notion that "oh, that full dress Emerson custom must be better made than their raggedy production knives, or it wouldn't cost $3500" that fades the moment you pick it up and see that it isn't centered, there are huge, irregular gaps between the scales and the bolsters, and daylight between the scales and the handles.

Two of the worst knife purchases I've ever made were full customs fetching well over a thousand dollars. :(

That sharpening job looks all wonky.
Is it even sharp?

With the lockbar issue you should send that back promptly.

It does not feel very sharp. Sharpening job looks very uneven. I haven't tested it on any thing yet , because I planned on returning it.

I've had a few full ti custom frame locks in the past and all of them have been shit....

I refuse to buy any ti frame locks without a insert for starters.

I would return it.

I imagine you are bummed, that is a chunk of change. They should make that right for you, the lock issue brutal.

With the exception of slip joints I have also been consistently let down with custom modern or tactical folders by some very established makers. Wont touch them anymore.

I would consider those issues worthy of a return also.

Just a quick note, don't play with it anymore. Don't open and close it, don't cut anything and definitely don't take it apart to try and diagnose it. Put it back in the packaging and return it.

Just sent it back to BladeHQ. The knife was brand new. I never cut anything with it. Hopefully everything will work out.
