I crossed a really scary bridge yesterday..

LOL! I've been there many times. It's been a long time since I drove over that bridge though.

Last time I was in that area, I crossed the Ohio River from Illinois to Kentucky, the old Hwy 45 steel grate bridge, on my motorcycle! Now THAT was scary. ;)

For a more mellow river crossing, use the ferry at Cave-In-Rock. :)

That one doesn't look that bad from the image.

This one gets me in near Delaware City, it's a high (for large ships to pass under) narrow two lane.

Welcome to So. Illinois!

You should have came over the bridge at Brookeport, it has a steel grate driving surface, that you can see through!!!:eek::eek::eek:

The bridge at Paducca was like that. Scared the hell out of me. Motorcycle wheels went squirrelly, bits of the grating were missing, and everything clanked and rattled. The worst, at the bridge apex was a stoplight for a construction zone - had to stop there for ten minutes with my feet down on the grating. :(

I had to look up where Brookport, IL was. :)

I have crossed the Ohio via I-24 several times, next time I am headed in that direction, I will do a little bypass and check out that bridge.

Maybe you guys are talking about the same bridge? If so, another ringing endorsement for it!!
I had to look in the atlas to see the name of the town on the Illinois side, it's Brookport. So yeah, we were talking about the same bridge.

There was a big yellow warning sign on the Illinois side of the bridge, as you start up the steep ramp. Someone had hit the sign with their car and all I could read was, "Danger Motorcycles..." By that point it was too late to turn back anyway.

Back when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel was only two lanes, it was always an adventure riding to Virginia Beach. Especially since they allowed passing. There always seemed to be a semi hiding around the next curve..

Even more disconcerting was the fact that you could feel the bridge sections moving back and forth if you came to a stop on two different road sections.

Those are beautiful bridges guys!!!!
Whats the matter, you guys just scared of heights or open spaces or something? :D

The Narrows Bridge has the steel grating. I've taken kids to games across it who absolutely shake with terror while we're on it.

I don't get it.

The condition of the bridge and overloaded semis over a period of decades is one thing that comes to mind. The Minneapolis I-35 bridge is another. I have driven over that one many times.

Which bridge at Paducah?

The one on I-24 was built new in 1975 and has always had a concrete surface.

EDIT:Oops, read further, I see it was Brookport, you meant.

I'm amazed they still use that old bridge!!!!

For some reason I hate bridges. I don't know why, I just do.

Driving over the Chesapeake Bay bride about 15 years ago was not my favorite thing ever. My girlfriend (now my wife) said just stop and I'll drive the rest of the way but I didn't, I just whined about it.

That looks like a kick as bridge to me. Although I could see how that would be scary, especially if you were stopped for 10 minutes.

Whatever you do, don't drive to Key West unless it's really just the height that is a problem.

I use to go over the Narrows bridge occasionally in my truck, I never saw anything wrong with it.
Maybe they have seen the videos of the old bridge :D
