I DO NOT need to get into watches!!

All this watch talk is making me interested in watches! I already have too many expensive hobbies, at least for my income level.

knives
guns
hiking gear
pens
flashlights

The list goes on and on, and now I'm looking at watches. I've been very happy with my Casio G-shock and Swiss Army entry level officers watch, and now I'm lusting after Seiko, Fortis, St. Moritz, Traser/Luminox, etc.

I may have to stop coming into the Gadgets and Gear section for a while!

Well I probably won't do that.

I just wanted to thank all of you for being such a bad influence on me.

Hey Paul, its just gets WORSE! You think custom knives an get $$.

The Luminox Navy Seals watch I got as a Christmas/birthday present is great. Its wicked bright. It looks like a low money generic black plastic watch so no one ever looks at it. Its reasonably priced and I wear it all the time.

I used the Casio G-shocks for over 25 yrs - it works and its cheap.

Men and their TOYS - that is what it comes down to!

Some of my other hobbies are:

fishing, hunting, mountain biking, tennis, archery, target shooting, airguns, winter camping, X-country skiing, and .....

Everything in moderation and we will be OK.

Paul,

I sympathize. I was perfectly happy collecting watches with only Swiss Army knife and a Myerchin rigging knife I use for sailing sitting in my desk. Then someone posted a link to bladeforums on the timezone site and I thought I’d wander over for a few moments.

I now wait patiently for my Large Chris Reeve wood inlay to arrive and I’ve even requested a Damascus blade.

Be careful with watches. When I started I thought my Rolex GMT was great. It’s now relegated to beater status and I put it on with old sneakers when I mow the lawn. On the bright side if you appreciate the workmanship in knives you’ll be amazed at some of the watches out there.

You know you're in trouble when you find yourself thinking $12,000 for a Lange 1 is a great deal. When you mentally calculate the price of a ticket to France ($450 or so) and the exchange rate (7.3 ish), and think you might be able to do slightly better at a watch store you know there, you have a real watch problem.

You are already in too deep! Might as well let go and take the plunge - resistance is futile!:-)
When I got into watches some four years ago, I never dreamed it would develop into an addiction!
I never dreamed it would get as bad with knives as it is already now, either!
On the other hand, both hobbies have been wonderful so far and I have found friends with the same passion(s) all over the world.
That has been worth all the money and then some!

Ian: yeah, TZ and the crowd there certainly has lured many a guy into the world of expensive watches! And it's funny how it becomes more and more acceptable - and eventually normal - that a Lange can cost that much!:-)
I went with (mostly) vintage watches early on, as I simply can't afford new higher end stuff!
Having a couple of friends in the vintage business helped a bit too! (www.vintage-watchmaker.dk)

Best regards

Paul, I am right there with you, buddy. I have a Seiko Montmarte I got from the Sportsmans Gude for $150 (down to $100 now) -- which is a nice watch but the "hidden clasp" comes open when you do anything that flexes your forearm.

I have a Timex Reef Gear I got for $20 (a good deal) though the metal band was crap (the folded links came apart when I pushed the pins out)

And now I got a Luminox from Ashford's Outlet (see the other thread on Searching for the Perfect Watch") and I love it. It is much brighter than the Hesco and I actually like the looks of this one (the pic is in that other thread -- though the vibrant blue dial does not show). The Luminox Marine series is nice. www.omegamanenterprises.com has some good prices. No blue faced ones though. (my favourite watch face colour)

Anyhoo, I have the Seiko for formal occasions, the Timex for "grub work" and the Luminox for daily wear. Now I need another occasion to justify another watch!!

So far I haven't bought anything. With the Blade Show coming up I won't be buying anything before, or for quite a while after. I've found a Seiko Kinetic field watch that I really like, but I've only seen it online. I don't know how bright the hands will be in darkness.

That Luminox that Clay got is really nice. It doesn't seem to say Navy Seals or anything on the front. I hear different stories about the movement on the Luminoxs, but they aren't too expensive.

I really like several of the watches in the other current watch thread. I really want a new bike in the next year or so too, so I don't know what will claim my money knife/watch/bike/something else shiny!
