I found a new wet/dry sandpaper that is high performance in my opinion

Hi, I found a new sandpaper that I think is a great value and high performance as well. I have been using Rynowet red paper by Indasa. Black Diamond paper, at least two 3M wet/dry papers and a couple of papers by Norton. I am referring to sheet sandpaper in 9x11 size that I use by hand an also on my 9inch disc. The new paper is made in Germany by Starcke and is called Matador. It is waterproof and is silicon carbide paper. I have been buying it for a good price in grits from 150 to 400 (so far) in packs of 50. I have found it sold on Ebay but don't know where else to buy it. It cuts cleanly and last as long as my other favorite papers but it is a good bargain for its performance and quality in my opinion. I just thought that I would share this. Larry

Larry does it last as long as the Rhyno red because that stuff was a revelation in certain grits, even compared to my old favorite, Black Ice.

Larry, I've been using it as well because when I bought my first supply of paper I was shopping ebay and I liked their price per sheet. I've used 3M and Klingspor since but I keep reordering the Matador. I have zero complaints. It works well on my disc at any speed and holds up well to water or WD40 when hand sanding.

I have 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 2000. They've all been great though I've only used the 1200 and 2000 a bit.

Supergrit still has 50 packs of Rhynowet for $24. That's under 50 cents a sheet. The Matador paper that I can find is selling for $12-$14 for a ten pack. That's $1.20-$1.40/sheet. It would have to be absolutely incredible paper to be worth that much more over Redline...

Not to rain on your parade, just thought I'd remind you what a good deal Rhynowet is over there in case you don't buy from them.

I found that Amazon, and Gesswein also carry Matador. Looks like Gesswein's prices are a fair bit better, at least in the lower grits, than Ebay, if you buy enough that the shipping cost is ameliorated.

The ebay vendor I am buying the Matador from is the same price for 220 grit. 50 for $24. 120 is $31 but 220 and up is $24 for 50.

I didn't really look around when I was buying it at first but thought .50 a sheet was a good deal for SC paper, and the stuff has performed well for me.

I didn't hear about Rhynowet until I saw it in a Wheeler video, and at that point I was stocked up, and still hesitant to buy AO paper.

If anyone using Rhynowet wants to trade me a few sheets for the same grit Matador in return, I'd be up for it so we could each try before we buy. Pretty cheap to mail a few.

OK, but not my example for price comparison. Just want to point that out, but definitely be aware it's sold in half sheets so you don't order it on accident.

Salem, my experience has been that Rhynowet red would be a good buy even if priced the same as the other premium paper from Norton, 3M, Klingspor, etc. I accidentally ordered their black paper once and it was no better or worse than the other guys premium product, but red is some great stuff!!!!

Hey guys, is the price you are paying like 1.39 a sheet? That's what I am finding it for on E-bay, and that's not a great price to me.

Please advise!!

Salem, I have buying Matador in 50 sheet packs for less than a dollar per sheet. ( I paid 78 cents per sheet incl shipping) I like it better than Rhynowet Red but I have plenty of both. You might try to buy some in volume and try it out.

I just looked online for a better deal than the 78 cents per sheet (9x11) that I paid but I could not find a better or even equal price. I guess I bought the last listed by that supplier on Ebay. I bought several hundred sheets so maybe there will be a new listing soon with a decent price. I hope that I can find a new source because I really like this paper. If not then The Rhynowet from Supergrit is a real bargain. Larry

Yes, it's .61 cents per sheet shipped from the ebay store I buy from. Sent you an email. Free shipping over $60 so order 3 packs and it's .50 per sheet.

Well I live in Germany and Matador is one of the brands I use. Mainly because it is good and available to me for a fair price.
I've used Rhynowet and 3M and Sia as well.
I haven't noticed real difference between these quality brands

Kuraki, can you share the name of the seller you use?

Yes I didn't because I thought it wasn't kosher if they weren't a sponsor. Perfect Sanding Supply.

I first started with Matador, but later switched to Rhynowet when I discovered it. It is not quite as thick and I find that it tears less easily and also looses its grain less when being worked. I did not conduct a more rigorous testing though. Rhynowet is cheaper too - when bought in bulk I pay 20€ for 50 sheets. That is nearly 50% less then Matador.

Why do people keep saying 2x? 20 euro is $22 at current exchange. Matador is $24 with free shipping from the seller I posted in this thread.

Don't get me wrong if Rhynowet is superior, then great. I've ordered some to try myself due to this thread. But it is not half the cost of Matador, at least in the states. I don't understand why it would be less expensive here than it is in it's country of origin however.

OK after spending some time with the rhino paper in 150 and 500 I'm sold. It truly is a higher performer than the matador silicon carbide stuff. It's sharper initially, it lasts longer on my disc. It's not 100% better, but easily 25. Both on hard steel or soft handle material. Pretty amazing for AO paper.

I just came in from the shop a few minutes ago where I was roughing out a pair of bolsters with some Rhyno red and it was not cutting it so I switched to some Matador paper and everything cleaned up quick. Not a scientific test I know but I am not going to throw away my Matador paper just yet. It is a little thicker than the red paper for starts. Don't get me wrong though... I like the red paper and bought several hundred sheets of various grits. It's not really that important which you use as long as you get a good finish. Larry
