I know these work well when used by the South African Police for riot control. I'm sure it won't take long to master this particular implement of the martial arts.

Does anyone on the forum own one?

I had a Cold Steel old style sjambok. Cheap but effective. I don't know about riot control, but I would not like to get smacked by it.

Victorian-era circus ringmaster with a sjambok, published in The Delineator, November 1891.

For the non-fashionistas amongst us, The Delineator (1875–1937) was a New York fashion magazine briefly edited by Theodore Dreiser (1907–1910).

Sjamboks were traditionally made from hippopotamus back hide, and both the extent and degree of flexibility could be customized to suit the user. British colonial police used them to beat hell out of people from Cairo to Cape Town. Modern police sjamboks are made of plastic, and newsreels from apartheid South Africa frequently showed them being used to beat hell out of demonstrators. One would hope that is history now, but I suspect not.

I have many of them. The older smaller ones were the best. They sting like crazy and would be a great defense weapon on a walk. They are near indestructible and very inexpensive. I use them in my martial arts classes to help students focus. They work especially good against snakes and such. A superior non-lethal weapon. I totally recommend them.

I am buying this for the purpose non-lethal self-defense. So many of the people in this neighborhood are/have been using alcohol as well as other drugs in a self-destructive manner. Our "city fathers" lean so far to the Left, that they're in danger of falling over! When these degenerates actively engage in harassment, the police act as if they will get in trouble if they protect the public. As a result, they kiss their collective butts, pat them on their heads and essentially tell hem to "go and sin no more." I personally feel that an immediate comeuppance for their misbehavior is in order. It seems that painful discouragement when I am threatened with physical violence, seems appropriate.

What area do you live in?

Where can I find an affordable hippo hide sjambok? I don't want a plastic version (call me sentimental). I need a non lethal tool for the stray dogs.

I'm sorry, I ordered the newer Cold Steel polymer version. I presume the only way to obtain one of the originals, is to look to an African source.

Good luck.

Be sure to post the play by play of confrontation, it should be hilarious untill the police show up.

I have one of the old ones and its neat, but if someones serious about causing you harm i dont see it being all that effective. Unless you are trying to get them to be more serious about hurting you.

Good luck.

I have a few of the CS models.

A solid hit with one of these will easily stop the average person.

Your only hope is to find an affordable hippo. Then you get to roll out a section of hide, a highly labor intensive task.

Forget the hippo hide sjambok. Years ago they were listed on eBay for $$$. No more. Try to find them with a google search. I doubt that you will have much luck there either.

I read somewhere that they use sjambok against snakes. I'ts nasty but cheap thing if you had to beat somebody for self defense

Yuppers! they work great for poisnonous snakes. You whip it at the end, and can cut a snake to ribbons! These are intese impact weapons that can inflict severe trauma.

I received mine in today's mail and was quite impressed with it's flexibility and power. With a little practice, I think that it will make a wonderful defensive piece!

Slide it up one sleeve and across your shoulders and down the other sleeve. Hidden away, one quick pull and you are armed.
