I missed out on the sog desert dagger, how does the new sog fixation compare?

I really liked the design of the sog desert dagger, but they stopped making it before I could get one. Now they're unreasonably priced. However, I just found out about the sog Fixation. Does anyone have any experience with the fixation that can tell me how it compares to the desert dagger? I can see that the blade is slightly different, with two channels, but how do the size and materials compare?

Thank you.

i might be able to help u out.. email me here or at dax0007athotmail dot com

I've heard that the fixation series aren't near as quality as the original stuff, and SOG quality has been taking a downhill turn recently.

Don't get a Fixation and expect the quality and finish of the original Desert Dagger. I would get a Daggert 2 before I got a Fixation. I have two original Desert Daggers and a few versions of the Daggert. Although not as pretty, the current production Daggert 2 should fit the bill just fine and is WAYYYY better than the Fixation. If SOG still made the satin Daggert 2, you would be set, but it was just a special run.

However, if you are patient, you may be able to score and original Desert Dagger for around $150. I have seen them go around this price, but it all depends on who is watching and/or sniping.

Oh yeah, make sure you sterilize anything you buy from Dax. His unhealthy fixation (no pun intended) with SOG knives makes me wonder what he does to them in the privacy of his own home :)

Havoc hahaha! Yes I do have a problem and Havoc is right!! Havoc-when u are ready to sell that Tigersharkback to me --let me know -seriously-.. I am back in the market! Someone bought my BNIB one for 1200.

Good god!! You were not supposed to sell that Tigershark!! I would have given you...well, less, but damn!!

I have two of the satin tigers, the one from you and from this nice lady who's husband died. Kinda creepy, but I am not totally sure I want to part with either if them...well, not without a nice profit from you :)

In all seriousness, send me an email and we can talk.

I have an original SOG Desert Dagger and consider it a waste of money. I took the handle off (with a little difficulty) and discovered a VERY narrow tang. I presume this knife was made for some sort of combat application, but considering how weak the knife is there's no way I would trust it for anything more than a letter opener. I was never happy with how thin the blade is either. Thin blade + narrow tang = a knife just begging to get broken.

For those who missed out on buying one, I consider you lucky.

I got one years ago and didn't do much with it. Took it out one day to my throwing set up outside, it took a few sticks in a tree round and snapped in half. Don't try and reenact the kill bill scene where she throws it, it'd end up breaking.

Wow. I know throwing is realy hard on knives, but I've thrown my sog seal pup a lot and never even felt like it would break. I'm second guessing my desire for a desert dagger at this point. Thanks for the responses.

The Desert Dagger is a weapon, with minor utility use as an after thought. It's not for batoninig and obviously not for throwing. Frankly, if you throw a knife like this, you should get a broken knife in return. I've never heard of any issues with the tang being a problem either.

I think the DD is a fine knife for what it is, if the guard was slightly larger it would be nearly perfect in my opinion.

Do yourself a favor and search youtube for info on the Fixation version. You'll find several that broke under far less stress. I don't know what you expect, but maybe you should get a Esse 5-6 instead, or maybe an Ontario from the Ranger series.

I'd love an esee-5 as well, but the reason I liked the desert dagger so much had a lot to do with the look and feel of the knife. I think it looks really awesome, and it felt great in my hand. I'm sure I'd never break it, because I'd probably never "use" it for anything. It would be part of a collection. I don't like poor quality knives, though, so in light of these drawbacks and limited availability, I'm just going to push it down the wish list a bit and pursue something else.

I'm no fan of Sog, especially the newer stuff, but I don't see what "drawbacks" you refer to. -In any event, if you don't care for poor quality knives, I don't think they come much worse than the Fixations, so go ahead and forget about those too unless you just want a toy.

Guys.. A Sog fixation is a 30-35$ knife.. and its made to STICK SOMEONE in the GUT so they can die.. Well justkidding but i am sure its a stabber just like that one they used in WWII to the major neck vein..

The desert Dagger is over priced as a collectors knife at 200 but when it MSRP i think it was like 80$..

Yeah. I have no plans on getting the fixation either at this point. Dax really hit the nail on the head. I wish I'd gotten the desert dagger back then, cause it's only worth about $80. Now it's far too expensive for its quality.

In that light, can anyone recommend any other nice daggers that are reasonably affordable and have the desert dagger "look" while being a better value?

Thanks.
