ion wednesday i got hired for a new job and one of the things i need to purchase in order to be in compliance with company policy is a good slip-resistant black book. anyone have any recommendations?

I wear Danner GTX at work and like them a lot. Light, plenty of support, and more comfortable than anything else I've worn. Iv'e been wearing them about a year now and they are holding up well. Other than some wear on the soles they look nearly new. Take a good shine too.

A little cheaper but still pretty good are the Bates Enforcer series. Until I got the Danners these were my duty boots. Good quality, but the soles are a softer composition of rubber and wear pretty fast.

I had some Altamas and they were ok, but the toe box was a bit on the tight side for me. They were sturdy, but just not comfortable. I might have just gotten a bad pair.

Ahem. All that means is a rubber sole not leather or hard plastic. If you are looking at a job that is messy or might destroy boots quickly then I would go to wally world or the surplus store and find some cheap "work boots", if you are in a job like construction or something that won't just kill boots in a couple of months then I would go with Doc Martins or Red Wings. Last thing, good boots are NOT cheap, you really do get what you pay for.

If you really need "certified" I think there are some OSHA or similar standards that equipment can meet, this is usally for things like electrical insulation or chemical ( And I mean really nasty chemicals) resistance or fire retardance.

i have worn a pair of wellco infantry boots for about a year now and they still are holding up great. it's basically a new style infantry boot with goretex liners and vibram soles. they're $70 cheap and made right here in nc. alot of the rescue guys around here wear them because they are made for worse stuff than we usually see. the soles are good on wet surfaces, they are waterproof but a little warm, and they offer good protection without a steel toe. here's the address: http://www.wellco.com/html/icbirr.html

they also make more athletic based boots as well, i have not tried them.

hope it helps

Before I was an armed guard, I was a sous chef (Steven Segal look out). The owner said we could wear any athletic shoes or boots we wanted, BUT he'd pay for half if we bought our shoes from Shoes For Crews. Now, even my daily shoes are SFC 3/4 hightops in Black (Of course). I think I get them for 50 bucks. The only problem with the sneaker sole, is that it can get loaded up with soft snow and that is kind of like walking on ice with wrestling shoes. However, the boots never gave me a problem. A lot of big chainstore restaurants endorse their use as well.

You could go with an expensive Meindl or Danner model, but I would recommend German army boots.

Yep, I'm biased, but I have found these boots to be the best choice you can make at that price point (they should be priced around 120 bucks or something like that). Very comfortable and robust, and I never slipped when I was wearing them (on muddy ground, wet floors, you name it).
They come with a hardened leather tip section which in my opinion is vastly superior to both steel-toed and non-reinforced boots. Steel caps can break or even cut off your toes in an accident and the hard leather will protect your toes almost as well while being far less dangerous.
No need to purchase extra laces some boots require, the ones the Bundeswehr model comes with are sturdy as hell.

Be sure to get your hands on the new model, the old version looks a little better, but its features are outdated.
