I need a leather sheath maker in Denver

Gentlemen, I collect traditional pattern hunters, and a few others I admire. Sometimes they have no sheath, or a poor sheath. To complete the "utility" aspect of the tool, I would like to deal face to face with a leather worker in or around Denver, Colorado. I have had no success finding a craftsman in the tradition of Heiser, Gutcher or Byrd. A local knifemaker who has time and inclination to make a decent sheath would also be welcome. Can you recommend anybody?

I'm in Denver. I send mine to a guy I know in Maine. I can hook you up with him if you email or PM me.

If I'm wrong about Denver, let me know.

I know you mentioned wanting to deal face-to-face, but if that doesn't work out I would recommend sending a "test" knife to Paul Long in Kerrville, Texas. If you don't like the sheath he makes, I will buy it from you - that's how highly I recommend his work. I have seen and handled lots of leatherwork from other makers and I would put up Paul's work with the best. He recently made a sheath for me for a fighter - my first custom sheath, actually - and I was just blown away by the workmanship. Exotic skins, fancy inlays, etc. are all nice - but to an anal-retentive like me, it is the basic workmanship that will impress me. When I saw stitches that look like they were measured with a micrometer, I was just blown away.

Paul does excellent work. I like how he lines his sheaths with deer skin to protect the knife from being scratched.

Thanks to all.

Cockroach, I also found a decent little shop while visiting in Mason, TX, not far from Kerrville. Paul Long sounds good, but...

I'll look around Denver some more.

I can HIGHLY recommend Mike Bartol for that type of sheath. He resides just south of Denver in the Colo Springs area - if you want his contact info email me at chuck@wrtcleather.com or check out the Sheath Making forum on The Knife Network - he posts there frequently as MtMike....

Thanks Ray for the recommendation, but I'm currently 10 months back ordered and mostly work on historical stuff only anymore....

Thanks to all.

Happy hunting! And if you decide to try Paul Long, my offer stands.

Just so it won't appear I was ignoring lawp, I emailed him directly and gave him some reference information.

Thanks to all for your kind words and props.

Paul
