I recently got hired back on with the Census Bureau. Yay! Unfortunately, since it is office work in a federal facility, weapons (including blades longer than 2.5 inches,) are forbidden. It looks like I need a new Spyderco:D

I know I should have the entire catalog seared into my frontal lobes by now, but It's hard to keep up with all the Spydercos, past, present and future. Here are my requirements. . .

Blade less than 2.5 inches long.

Pocket clip equipped (tip down ONLY.)

Locking mechanism (no slipjoints, please.)

Other than that, I'm pretty flexible. The Cricket has caught my eye, but I'm unsure about that curvy blade. Is it hard to sharpen?

Please, by all means, let the suggestions fly!

Nab one of the sprint run MeerKats. NOW! :D

The reverse-S blade on the Cricket is easy enough to sharpen on the SharpMaker, and it is quite a cutter.

Most of the other small knives are tip up. The MeerKat is tip down with a deep pocket wire clip, and the Phantom lock is fun to spring on people as well as being easy to operate with one hand.

I just got a Spin about a couple hours ago. I'm liking it; it's nice and sharp, small and compact, and it's got everything you just described (tip-down only, it locks, < 2.5")

+1, plus you can make beer on that knife at the bar. "Bet ya a beer you cant close this in 30 seconds" Always remind them that FORCING it is NOT the answer.

Get a Lava while you still can. Seriously, it's an awesome knife.

Aside from being tip up only, the exact opposite of what he wants. ;)

As far as the Spin goes, it is a nice, light little knife, but I have problems with it.

My thumb barely bends far enough to open it. When I did carry it, I usually had to use both hands to open it, and I'm not real comfortable with a two-finger grip. YMMV.

Apparently I'm dyslexic...cut me some slack, it's the week before final exams ;)

And the same issue applies to the Chicago, also tip-up only.

Appropriate slack cut. :D It is a little unusual to see people other than me asking for tip down carry, and the Lava is a pretty cool little knife. It just feels too heavy for the amount of edge it provides for my taste.

This is really appropriate to the purpose of this thread, but you can switch CLB's other little big knife to tip-down

With that in mind, I've heard that the Cricket is like an upscale version of the Subcom in terms of feel. I haven't handled one, but assuming that's the case, I'd say my vote goes to the Cricket.

The added weight is probably bc it was made for self defense :p
It kind of acts as a fist pack for fist attacks following through with swipes from the blade.

That's not to say that's it's only purpose of course!

That could be. Self defense is not in my top 100 reasons for carrying a knife, so I don't even think about things like that.

Whether or not it's good for self-defense, I like the Lava because it's comfy and beefy. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a tip-down option, so it doesn't really apply here...

I know you want a clip, but you should consider the Ladybug. Drop it in your shirt pocket and you have an accessible, ergonomic, sharp little knife.

im not sure about the clip on the poliwog- i dont have it anymore and i didnt use the clip anyways- but iloved it when i had it. with the choil unless you have mongo hands, it fits very nicely in the hand. im pretty sure its tip up but worth a look!

I like the lean towards tip down for whatever reason. I say grab a para and grind off a bit of blade. :D

The Cricket is a nice knife, the reverse S isn't hard with the Sharpmaker.

How about a Kopa? It's a midlock with a 2 7/16" blade, and carries tip down. It is also one of the most, if not the most, "office friendly" clip equipped knives Spyderco has ever produced. Choice of scale materials too and the carbon fiber ones are quite reasonable right now, as are a couple others.
