i need to be able to flat grind my folder blades, it takes too much time and patience by hand on the belt grinder. ideally id like an inexpensive surface grinder but am open to other flat grinding suggestions.

any help would be greatly appreciated. and i live in the great white north, so american manufacturers will probably not ship to me in canada (for less than a grand).

Hey Peter,

Where in Canada? If you're in the NE, I just saw a good looking refurb on Craigslist in Massachusetts you might be willing to drive down after...that is, if'n it's still there and if'n you live in the NE.

Have you checked out the cool search site, Search Tempest? You can seach multiple Craigslist sites and eBay in various ways, like anything within X number of miles from your zip code, etc.

Good luck!

Phil

A new small Chinese (6x12 table, 7x1/2 wheels) surface grinder costs around $2700 new before shipping.

Wow, thanks for the heads up on searchtempest. I just tried it out for a few things, and you may have just cost me several hundred dollars! :D

If you can't afford a surface grinder and only want it to do folders, I'd consider just buying PG stock.

Or, if you're using a steel that you can't buy already PG, then just hire it done. Folders take such comparatively small quantities of steel that if you're going to spend $1k on surface grinding, you could probably have someone surface grind all the steel you'll use for the rest of your career for that $1k.

And then they're spending their time and you're not!

I've seen a few over the last few months on CL around $500. I don't have three-phase so I don't bother looking anymore.

Phil: SearchTempest is a great find. Thanks for letting us know about it. You saved me about 20 minutes everyday with it.

i found some local in the 800$ range. i may do that and upgrade later to a belt system.

I am happy for you. Was it in the local adds or a place that sells used machinery?
Not that I have the space or money right now but what the heck, I can sleep in the living room and eat ramen noodle for a couple of years. ;)
