Does anyone out here know if you can blue or blacken a stainless steel blade. I have looked around Google search and forum searches ect..... with no solid results.

A sharpie???

Sorry couldnot help myself, late nightand lot off longnecks...

I am interested in this also. I knew about the ferric chloride but what about the propane method? Could that heat affect the temper of the steel? If anyone knows the correct procedure, please let me know as I would like to try it. Thanks.

There are several spray on coatings commonly used on guns that after you spray you bake at a relatively low heat. They work pretty well and last, you can get a similar effect with Krylon spray paint as well. So I was actually serious.

Weatherby black Chrome plates their stainless barrels. Physical Vapor Deposition of TDLC, CBN, or TiAlN would also solve your problem.View attachment 458243 The left hand knife in the picture is coated with TDLC.

Heat coloring stainless doesn't work very well, as the colors are difficult to see. Even whewn done to carbon steel, the heat coloring wears quickly.
Paint or PVD coating is the only way to successfully color stainless. PVD is pretty expensive.

You can etch some stainless steels with acid also. Battery acid (sulfuric) or nitric acid are good candidates but not very safe to play with.

I've used PCB etchant (ferric chloride) and it turns stainless a dark grey/green/I dunno color. Works OK, just OK. Never tried the above. Anyone know what's in it?

Battery acid (sulphuric) is again a gray kinda shade. Anyone know what's in those etching pens you can buy to permanently mark steel? They are like $25 and don't last long. They leave a nice black mark.
