I want to start putting my makers mark on my knives.

I am finishing up a knife to sell, but it won’t have my mark on it. I tried using my Dremel to grind it in on some practice blades but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I would like to have one that I could stamp on the blade while it is still hot before heat treating. Would I be better off trying to make one out of key stock or an old punch, or just pay to have one made? If I was going to buy one, who makes these?

Here is a pic of my mark.

High carbon steel? If so you could get a stencil made up at a business store, stick it on and etch it.

If stainless you could do the same but electro etch it for a deep etch. Salt water and a 9v battery will get it done (see youtube). Results will vary but its cheap and easy to test on scrap. Many here including myself have made an etching machine and I make my own photo stencils. Some even get away with nail polish but you want a clean etch if it's something your willing to put your name on.

I only use carbon steel at the moment. We actually have a stenciling machine at work, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks

I've never used salt water that could etch stainless just saying. Salt water works great on high carbon though in my experience

I just started etching using salt water, works on S35vn and aebl.
Use positive for ground to etch, then negative ground to darken.

What press do you use?
Just the cheap 6 ton A-frame from Harbor Freight. It doesn't take a lot. I have a stamp and spring loaded holder from everstamp (henryaevers.com). You can whack it with a hammer, but I get much better results with the press.

I have one of his stamps, and even in annealed metal I can’t whack the fuckin’ thing hard enough to get it to stamp. Can you shoot a picture of your setup?

I stamp 15N20 which comes semi hard at around 45hrc. I wouldn't try anything above that. Most everything else is much softer and you have to be careful because you can stamp too deep.20200219_120156-756x756.jpg 20200219_120145-756x756.jpg
