BOISE -- A southern Idaho representative is frustrated his son was cited for illegally carrying a concealed dangerous weapon without a permit -- because he had a four-inch knife under his car seat.

Republican Rep. Pete Nielsen of Mountain Home said Thursday his son ended up paying $300 to remedy the situation after the traffic stop.

As a result, Nielsen aims to change Idaho's concealed weapon law, so it no longer applies to knives with blades four inches or less.

Nielsen said he's got the approval of Idaho police on his measure.

He actually wanted to allow longer knives be concealed without a permit.

But law enforcement agents told him four inches was their limit.

Nielsen is still working on his bill, after an initial hearing in the House State Affairs Committee.

The measure approved unanimously Thursday allows Idahoans to carry concealed knives with blades four inches or shorter without a permit. Longer knives used to prepare food, legal tasers and pepper spray would also be permitted under the proposal.:D

your thoughts?

cool, Iv'e beens snagged once or twice with a ''concealed'' knife wwwaaayy over 4'' and was never fined. there is a little more to this story though it think.

is good to know ID is loosing its grip

Cool! Everyone in Idaho should pressure him to loosen it even more to allow all sizes of knife. The 4" limit the cops want is totally arbitrary and not based on any kind of proof or scientific evidence that a longer knife is still dangerous. They are just making it up, likely from rumor between officers. Plenty of other states in the US have no length limit, and they have no crime stats showing any significant difference in crime committed with knives. There is nothing harmful you can do to someone with a knife that is not covered already by existing laws on assault, menacing, battery, or murder.

Was it ever passed?

The law would also allow pepper spray and batons as well.

I live in WA, but border with Lewiston, (ID) so I spend most of my time over there on a WA permit.
