Ideas for home made sheath for Recon Tanto?

My sheath issues only appeared recently and I'm not sure why, because even more coating has been stripped off with use and blade has been sharpened a lot of times by now so it should be thinner and smaller in theory.

To make things worse, my sibling dropped the knife while inside the sheath and the blade was completley dull I when I pulled it out. I resharpened again, and put it back. But there is some move to it as it's carried and it gets dull again. So I can no longer use my sheath to carry the knife, therefore my sheath is useless now. I no longer even keep the knife inside of it.

I need some ideas on how to make something at home, since I'm not in position to spend money on something like this right now. Denim, nylon, duct tape... all options are open

Any ideas are appreciated :)
Thanks in advance :D

Can’t help you there, sorry bud. Never tried this myself. Perhaps you can also ask around in the sheaths or GKD subforum?

Along the lines of duct tape, this may be a serviceable solution:

This is a temporary band-aid solution though. As soon as you can, I recommend getting a nice kydex sheath. I wouldn’t bet my life on a duct tape sheath.

If you’re gonna take a hike with a belt knife in the woods or something, use the warcraft tanto for now lol.
Yeah, I'll probably have a trip soon, thanks for this link :D

And yes, Warcraft Tanto will probably go with me for those 6 days. It'll be half time in the city and half time in nature. So I will need a big knife for that.

how's your woodworking skills? :-)
no wood?
try some thick old book hardcover
contact glue some canvas material
over it.
the main thing is to keep in mind
how movement and the weight of thr knife
will cut or puncture through s sheath.
for a heavy knife, its important for the
throat of a scabbard to be rigid and level
for the knife guard to rest upon.
the tip of the blade should not be touching
the sheath, so give at least one centimeter of space at the bottom of the sheath.
don't forget the welt...

get inspired with fundamentals of sheath
making...

Thanks for the reply man :D

I have lots of wood, but lack fine woodworking tools for this.

This idea with leather is also good :D

This will work for making sheath just so I can keep using it for yard work and other stuff at home and near home.

But for my wacation I'll have to take Warcraft Tanto with me.

If you want to buy a lifetime sheath contact @azwelke to build one. Ship him your knife and he will make an excellent Kydex holster.

Or, buy a few tools, materials, and make your own press. Leather or Kydex. Or both.

I bet if you do this and learn you will have friends and family who would like one for themselves.

Next option is buy a factory made sheath like OPS SPEC or similar. (Not sure if If I spelled that right. It’s a nylon sheath BeckerHeads have used and liked).

Whatever you decide I would be interested in seeing. Good luck!

I guess the glass in it causes the dulling?

My yard machete is in a sheath made of cardboard and duct tape at the moment. That's the cheapest option.

Kydex isn't super difficult but it stinks up the house and is hard to get perfect without spending $$ on the right tools.

If you have a drill, saw, epoxy, sandpaper and twine you could make a sturdy 3-part wood sandwich sheath for it pretty easily, no milling or carving needed. That would also be cheap.

For a basic leather sheath you just need leather, leather glue and a leather hand-sewer with twine, and a sharp knife to cut the leather. A drill to make the sewing holes is also helpful, even a dremel or manual drill is fine - although purists use an awl (time consuming) or a needle in a drill press (f you have one). Probably cost as much or more as buying a "decent" sheath though - I just bought one to replace the cardboard one for my machete for $12. A "good" sheath will cost 4x that or more.

I have saws, regular power drill, lots of needles and strings, lots of duct tape, I have epoxy too and yes, I have sharp knives.

I also guess it's the glass in the sheath causing dulling. A family member of mine used to have leather working tool so I'll see. If she still has it she could make very good sheath since she's experienced with it. She was making some money as a taylor for a while when she was unemployed.

Learning to make leather sheaths is a very worth while hobby.

About 20 years ago, I had funds to buy all the necessary equipment to completely set up for making kydex sheaths. Rivet dies, arbor press, heat gun, kydex press, materials, etc, etc...

Instead I wasted the funds on a sword and battle are set..

I do make leather sheaths now...

Update:

My family had BBQ while I was at work. They were looking for the newspapers for fire and they remembered I got some in my room. As my sibling swung the newspapers from top of my closet - Recon Tanto flung out and hit my cousin.
She had a small surgery, there are 4 stitches, she also got tetanus shot and antibiotics since they were scared that blade is dirty because of the fact it was oiled. The knife hit her in area around calf. She was also wearing leggings at the time to make it worse.

Family is now looking me as a bad guy, I'm really sorry for what happened but again I can't see this as my fault.

Sorry to hear that, but glad your cousin was treated successfully.

Three of my children are young adults ranging from 16 to 20. I recently had a baby late in life and now have to lock up all my knife collection. It’s just part of the gig.

It’s always a good idea to store items like knives in a manner that lessens any potential to cause harm to anyone.

Even so, sometimes things happen.

Yeah, but we don't have kids in the house, and both, my sibling and my cousin are grown up to make things even more sad.

In one hand, they should have known better than going into someone's room looking for something like that, and I find it strange that they didn't connect 2 and 2 and figure out that folded/rolled newspapers on top of decently high closet aren't something you see every day and there might be a reason why I put it there.

At the other hand, who will expect a knife to be inside newspapers on top of the closet? They're even visible from entrance of my room so I also don't wonder that much that they wanted to just get it and take few pages...

Anyways she will fully recover, and I hope there won't be any complications.
