A guy on my forums lives up in Alaska, and mentioned a while back that he helps shuttle supplies for the Iditarod and picked up some dog booties whenever he was doing shuttle runs. I, of course, instantly begged for some, and he was nice enough to send a set. I have been watching the Iditarod show on Discovery, so I am currently fascinated by the whole race and everything involved.

They are basically just Cordura with elastic and velcro, with no insulation. I wanted something to protect my mutt's paws on rough and rocky terrain that can shred his paws if I am not careful. Argo does not appreciate them too much, but I am guessing that is mostly because he can't walk on our wood floors without sliding all over the place. :)

Baby socks and duct tape also works. Whenever my dog gets a cut on her paw she keeps licking it. so i put a bandage with some polysporan on, and a baby sock over top, with duct tape to get it tighter, and some duct tape on the bottom for traction and protection.

That's not a bad idea, thanks for the advice. On the show, they rub some sort of cream into the paws as well, so I am wondering if that is just some sort of moisturizer or if it is something more specialized.

Yes, the booties help to keep out the snow/ice chunks which splay out the toes when it freezes and that is what hurts when they run/walk.
That is why the dogs will chew out the ice.

Also, the booties work good if you live where there is road salt or other nasty stuff that gets put down to help with de-icing.

You do not want fido to ingest that stuff when he cleans his feet out. :)

My shepherd paws get iced up in the winter too, so I got him a pair of booties from the pet supplies store, but these look way better. I'm going to have to scour the net until I find some now. I think he might like this kind better as well, I assume they would feel more like "barepaw" then the insulated ones he currently has.

Thanks alot for the offer, I'll continue scouring the interwebs and I'll be in touch if I cant find something similar.
