I'm looking for a quality machete, preferably bolo

Bark river knife and tool makes a bolo IIRC...not sure about the availability though.

Looks quality, but I'm looking for one with the weight much more to the tip, that looks like a gentle kukri

Yeah I stay away from cold steel. Maybe a little more than you were looking for but I LOVE my Scrapyard 1311. If your not familiar with the Busse knife group it might be a little tough to learn about at first but the 1311 is worth the effort. Can't be purchased from the factory anymore but the exchange and flea bay have them regularly. They also have the Scrapyard 1111 coming out. A good Khukuri is always nice too.

The 1311 looks like a great machete, but I don't know if i can drop $250+. I'll keep a look out for one though!

tramontina and imacasa make good machetes. im partial to imacasa but either brand will work just fine. ought to be able to get one for twenty bucks or so but they will require some work to get them sharp.

I have the Condor Bolo Machete, it is quality, though pretty thick compared to most machetes

This may sound harsh, and it is, but you would be stupid  to buy from anyone but http://www.baryonyxknife.com/

They will thin out the edge and convex it and you will be satisfied with their service because they only send out ones that meet their standards. It only costs a few dollars extra to get the edge done right and he carries an excellent selection of proven tools from some really good brands. Check out Condor stuff, it's the real deal and the Engineer Bolo is amazing.

The proprietor is also one of BFC's own, Fortytwoblades.

Baryonyx is a geat vendor, and Condor's machete line is very good quality at a very reasonable price. Imacasa's(parent company of Condor) lineup is cheaper, but if you get one of those, you'll definitely need to be willing to touch up the blade yourself or have have Baryonyx do it for you, as they're very rough to start with...also, they don't come with sheathes, unlike Condor's machetes which come with very good quality leather sheathes.

Good to know. I am in the market for a good bolo myself and I like the idea of having the edge refined BEFORE it gets to me. I'll likely make my purchase from them for that reason alone. Thanks for the heads up! :)

Condors sheathes are just about the best thing going in that price range. I also love Condors willingness to change, they certainly seem to know what people want including this forum.

Agreed, they quickly remedied the non-full tang golok (and other machetes) issue.

A Big Chris Barong/Bolo Hybrid will make you a very happy man. I will look into 42Blades as well.

Hey morning. I would like to suggest a 'Valiant Co.' Goloks as a User Machete. I had got one a year ago and its a beast for weight(very hefty) and thickness(1/4inch eye balling it) They ship from australlia and only took a couple of extra weeks compaired to normal shipments. A Con to the Golok is the Bone handles, you must be careful not to smash the handles on anything .. Mines amazing came super sharp and I would order from them again.

+1 for Condor, tramontina, and Imacasa. Beware though,
tramontinas come very dull and my 28" imacasa pata de chuche
came almost blunt. I purchased from machete specialists though.

I'd recommend Martindale. I have their Cleaver Bolo machete and it is a darn nice chopper. It is also thicker and heavier than most typical machetes and has a nice distal taper. It is dull out the box though so you'll have to sharpen the edge yourself.

they come that way by design. the are supposed to be finished, aka sharpened by yourself.

i can't prove this, but my grandad told me in the old days machetes, axes, shovels, etc came mostly dull or unfinished on the sharpening.......on purpose and you were supposed to sharpen them up to the angles you needed. this still hasn't changed so much on the shovels, axes, machetes, etc in the box stores.....but what has changed is home sharpening has about died off except for those of us on these boards. hence the frustration folks have with dull tools.

all that said even companies who sharpen cutlery prior to sending them, i'm not really impressed often......7 times out of 10 i have to finish them myself....good thing i can sharpen.

lastly yep, imacasa, and tram...most bang for the buck, imho, if ya don't mind finishing them off. or you can buy the condors, and just touch up the edge as needed or buy them from baryonyxknife....great dealer with good tools for folks who like to use them.
