I'm wondering about scalpels.

I know that this would be better suited in the classification of razors, but that's all straight-razors and shaving. Best put in in general knives.

Anyway, I'm looking for decent surgical scalpels and -unsurprisingly- am having very little luck.

No, I'm not a surgeon and will not be using it for surgery, but I have other uses that closely parallel that in terms of what the tool needs to be. I've looked at Amsler Knives and they're pretty close, but I was wonder what else is available, preferably with better materials.

No, I'm definitely not looking for actual surgical scalpels, as in the ones used by surgeons. They're sterile single-use tools that are made to be solid and serviceable yet cheap and disposable. They'll stand up to repeated use about as well as an ax made of Play-Doh.

Anyway, I'm hoping there's more out there. Any insight is helpful.

If you just want the aesthetic of a scalpel, I'm sure you can have one made for <$150.

The whole idea of the scalpel is to be sharp, clean, and disposable. As you mentioned. Looking at the Amsler Hurricane, you really just want the aesthetic. You can acquire the sharpness on your own or pay one of the reputable users here to do so for you.

If I'm wrong, shoot me... or just correct me so maybe I could try helping you in another way.

Yeah, the aesthetic is a big part, and I'm no stranger to sharpening, but the profile and style is more for precision and that's what I'm after.

Regardless of what I say I'm after, you're probably right.

Even so, it's obvious that I can have one made- If you can think of a knife there's someone out there, especially here, that will make it. What I'm after is one that you don't have to have custom made.

Any ideas?

Drawing a blank on aesthetics that're orientated... that way. Although, that Amsler Hurricane is pretty sweet, you might be better off just getting in contact with a few of these smiths on the forums.

That knife(?... 5" oval, so what... 1" tops 1.5" blade?) is fairly beefy for a scalpel profile. Is the blade what you want to be scalpel orientated because that handle is more skeletonized spear shaft. I'm probably drawing a huge blank on some obvious company that markets these...

Darn. Maybe someone else can think of a company. My best bet for you would to be(to sound like a broken record), get in contact with a smith\builder here, show them or describe to them the profile of your ideal knife\scalpel profile. Since it's likely going to be a fixed blade, almost anyone who does custom knives could likely make it for you. I'm currently talking with a user here about building a custom flipper and so far so good. I've only gotten quick responses from the people I asked to quote or tried to peak their interest.

You may want to check out the Havalon Piranta. The blades are scalpel like and replaceable, but they can also be resharpened.

I do not have one myself, but have seen people speak highly of them.

Lol, I doubt there's too many places you could post a sentence like this without raising any red flags!

I saw OP in another thread looking for a windowless white cargo van. Not to use to abduct victims, of course, but uses that closely parallel that.:D

Boker Plus Urban Survival Knife ? Sorry no pics of mine but google. Would probably make a poor scalpel (I have not used mine yet :D) but has a kinda surgical look to it I guess. Blade shape is straight though.

Good luck.

Would woodcarving knives be closer to what you are looking for? They have very precise edges for detail work. I do some whittling myself so my knives are usually bigger, but wood carving knives are smaller and razor sharp from good makers.

Try Helvie or Del Stubbs knives for examples of these.

That's what I was thinking.

Boker urban survival comes to mind... I have a couple "disposable" scapels with retractable sheaths around the house and I must say they are pretty resilient for what they are... and replacement blades are pretty cheap

The Bark River Micro Canadian is what I use:

Check out A G Russell's Hunter Scalpel, I've carried one on and off for 15 years. It's a small sharp blade with a decent size handle, not sure if this fits your bill but they're under $25.

Scarification is dangerous.

Dependent on actual purpose, I think benchwarmer is probably on to something.

Since a surgical scalpel is not actually a knife, IMO, if I told you where to buy a scalpel, I would not be in violation of the deal spotting rules. Our dealer members sell knives, not surgical scalpels. Therefore, search the McMaster Carr catalog. They sell surgical scalpels.

Not sure if you're looking for something that looks like a scalpel, or one that is made like a scalpel and cuts like one. If the later, Havalon makes knives with replaceable blades that are made in the same way scalpels are.

They don't look like scalpels, however.

One of the prior posts mentioned them as well.

They look like they could make an awesome automatic. They're just flippers though, aren't they?
