So got my heat treat oven working great after burning through an element, but after making my own element from kanthal wire and a piece of all thread as a mandrel, I decided to do some D2. Is there a way of pushing an inert guess (argon) into the oven instead of using stainless foil as a more cost effective means?

You have to have a furnace designed for that otherwise you be using lots of argon.
You have a choice of foil, inert gas , or vacuum. The later two need specill furnaces !

I have an industrial heat treat oven that is designed for gas, and I have inert gas and a regulator. This is great for wonky shapes. But for knives, I still use foil. It works really well and it is less expensive and you can plate quench right through the foil (when done properly) where inert gas can't protect the blade once it is pulled from the oven.

Good foil can be reused a dozen times or more.
