Decent or Junk? I note that Boker has a good number of "Damascus" steel knives in the under $100 street price category being sold by major intenet knife sellers, including Bladeforums members and Amazon sellers. Are these genuine Damascus and how good are the blades? Any idea of the country of origin for the damascus work. Some even have damascus steel bolsters.

From what I see Boker seems to have Damascus knives in a wide range of prices.

I have 1 Boker with 300 layer damascus folder that I bought when I got back into knives a several years ago. I had another 1 too but traded it.

I don't know how a damascus blade Boker knife could be quality damascus for the $100 price range. The steel may look like damascus, but but not the quality of real damascus.

I talked to a rep from Boker on the phone when I bought my Boker damascus knives that told me that their damascus blades were made by a knifemaker in Germany

and shipped them to the US for final finishing. The process takes 18 to 24 hours and it quite involved.

Damascus is called damascus because it was first made in Damascus, Syria a Long time ago.

No real answers so I went on the Boker web site and found the following info:

Are all of your knives manufactured in Germany?
No. Boker USA, Inc. carries several different brand names, which are manufactured in various parts of the world. Please refer to the list below:

■Boker knives: Solingen, Germany
■Boker Arbolito knives: Argentina
■Boker Plus knives: Taiwan and China (except model 02BO012, made in the USA)
■Cinch knives by Boker: Solingen, Germany (except model 11CI403Y, made in Argentina)
■Magnum knives: Taiwan and China
■Marttiini knives: Finland
■Opinel knives: France

As the inexpensive damascus Boker knives are listed in the "Boker Plus" and "Magnum" names they are from China or Taiwan. Not Pakistani damascus steel.

I have a Boker trapper folder & a Boker Plus Elegance B.O.B. knife. Both are great knives. The BOB is just pure awesomeness. Yup, made in China.
