I like watches! I have several good ones...thought I would try an inexpensive one for just knocking around...which is best?

I have an expedition for a couple of years now and I am very satisfied. It has taken some abuse and still looks good and behaves flawlessly. Mine has the analog face with the digital insert. Another EMT in my department who is currently serving in Afganistan also wears one. He is very happy with his also. He just came home on leave and I noticed he is still wearing his. So it is surviving combat as well as the Fire service. :D

if you're looking for an analog, automatic mvt watch then the seiko 5's are hard to beat. very reasonable price and very tough, only water resistant to 30 meters though so no swimming. as far as digital goes then the timex ironman is pretty good. I personally prefer casio. it's really amazing how good a watch you can get for very little money.later, ahgar
be careful if you go the seiko 5 route there are a lot of fakes out there.

expedition is good
got it as birthday present, swimmed in salt water in it - everything is ok including leather strap.
Just minor complaint - button that turns light on is often been unintentionally pressed.

You might also want to take a look at the Pulsar Tech Gear Solar 4000 "PUA-" series. I have 3 of 'em (2 PUA-109, and a PUA-111), and they are QUALITY watches, for not alot of money...

Hi Glockman,

Do you know any online dealers who have the Pulsars you speak of? I had a Pulsar analog/digital and loved it but the battery life was disappointing.

You might want to try www.bluedial.com or "the 'bay"...:).

I've carried Timex turn-ring 24hr/60minute alarm watches for 7 years. I think the first model was an leatherstrapped Expedition? The strap broke after a few years and the watch was lost. That was replaced with an Reefgear with velcro straps. After a year or so, I happened to drop it in the bathroom and the back plate flew off and I couldn't fit it back in. I send it back to Timex and they sent me a new replacement. I find the watch and the alarms reliable and I like the general design of them. The lifetime of the straps is not very long, 1 to 2 years.

Have been picking up a few Seiko 5's on ebay lately---really starting to love the cantankerous(sp?) things--------had a Seiko 5 in the '80's that I managed to kill off after its 3rd trip through the washing machine----I always forgot it in my pocket.

A good price for a Seiko 5 off ebay is about $40-----$20 to $25 plus $18 shipping from Singapore.

Have 6 year old Timex Expedition that just keeps running despite all the neglect and abuse I give it.

Oh ya---not a fan of leather straps---they get real stinky in short order on my wrist----I've even tried washing them with Dawn dish soap---no help---just as stinky.

Bear in mind 30m is almost 100 feet! If you are swimming as deep as this I suspect you may be a fish!!!!
Check for fins and gills to be sure........
The Seikos are hard to beat for the bucks!

Since I've yet to get into the expensive watch thing, like some of you guys, the titanium Seiko watch that I got from the Seiko outlet store in Branson last year for $100 is working out very well for me.

The inexpensive Timex Expeditions seem to hold up pretty well. My brother has one, that he lost on the bottom of a pool, and recovered about 72 hours later- and it works fine. He has beat that thing pretty well. The one feature that seems to have slowly died was the indiglo feature.

Myself, I'm a Vostok Kommandirskie man:cool:

Vostok watches are the next best thing when it comes to inexpensive autos, although their watch designs lie between the absurd and the tacky.:D

I myself am a Seiko 5 believer. Had one that my dad gave to me when I was 13 y.o., it was the watch that my aunt gave him when he started medical school, which was about 25 years ago. Watch runs 5 minutes fast every week, I find it exceptional because this watch hasn't been serviced not once in its lifetime.

Some of their newer designs are 'absurd' and could definetely be labeled 'tacky'. However, Vostok does seem to be pretty innovative, and IIRC, they did make the first auto watch with an alrm a couple years ago. They also manage to win their share of industry awards.

The Amphibia, and their older (military) designs don't seem to be as absurd as the newer ones.

The Kommandirskie is mechanical (daily wind)- not an auto.

Been carrying a Timex Digital compass for a while now. Hasn't failed me yet. Cheap enough to buy 2.

I have an analog Expedition that I found on the ground about four years ago - it keeps perfect time and is still on the same battery. I also have a digital Expedition that I've had for ten years - also works great.

My "fancy" watches are a pair of Citizen Eco-Drives, one of which had to go back to the factory for warranty work after only two months. It's been great since then, luckily.

What I'd really like is an automatic, mechanical watch with a Roman numeral face (not the diver style), but I don't know where to look.

I have a Timex Expedition (analog, with digital window) that I've had for maybe 6 years now.

Seems to be doing fine, and I've been a little hard on it...
