I am looking into getting a large stockman. I have heard about the Buck 307 Wrangler. I do not believe it is currently made, but it is available. Would any of you kind, knowledge people care to educate me on this pattern?

Thanks!

Per, Welcome . THE 307 is a jumbo stockman pattern larger than the 301 . Camallius began making them for Buck in the early 70's perhaps 1972 . Production was moved to Buck's plant in 1984 for the 300 series and the 307 was dropped in 1998 . You can still find them on auction sites . DM

What he said, and it will look like one of these...300

Thanks 300 . Is the main clip blade on the 307, 3.25" versus 3" on the 301 ? Their differences are slight but evident . DM

Blades are 420 I think, definately not carbon. They are very good hard working knives. I have an old one that does very well for me. I actually prefer it over the 301.

I was keeping quite but,

There are a lot of folks MUCH better on the metal issues than me, but remember these knives are Camillus built. Buck did not ship them special blades so you are looking at Camillus forged/purchased/heat treated SS. Good chance its 440A maybe C if we are lucky, I know there is someone out there thats a Camillus person who might know what was common Cami. SS. I have never heard a Buck offical state any requirement that might have been in a Cami. contract.

From what I've been able to piece together, Camillus stainless could best be described as "whatever they could get cheapest at any particular time". :)

As for the Camillus made 307's I agree . We could only speculate . But those after Buck took their mfg. back the steel was 425M, then from 86-98 it was 420HC . Still, a good model with good steel . DM

David,

Sometimes we have to question our forum brothers statments, so we may need to discuss this. I need lots of questioning....

To my knowledge Buck NEVER made a 307. The Buck Shields are 'specials' that were put on by Cami. after being made by them. I.E. - I do not know WHO manufactured the Buck shield ? Maybe it was Cami.....I will ask Joe..... There are 321s with Buck shield also, maybe one other model.

Thats why they are hard to find....and why i think they are not 425.........If you know for sure I am wrong please tell me now so I won't go to SMKWs spreading wrong info.....

300, I certainly will not come against you as I respect you too much . But my reference is; the article is written by Vern Taylor, Joe H. and Larry O. entitled Buck Folding Knives
in Blade's Guide To Knives 2005 edition pg. 510 bottom right colum, Buck 300 Series Production . I'll not quote it but the first two paragraphs contain the info. of my post . It says many things but does say Buck made that model and it was discontinued in 98 . I have seen that model in a pawn shop with a early year mark > only I didn't buy it as the blades were ground down . DM

Well, see there you go. Info you can sink your teeth into.....I may have been wrong all this time.......I should have emailed you first so I didn't look bad......ha....
Won't be last time either.
