I am looking for some background on Moore Maker pocketknives.I"ve seen some around and handled a friends stockman example and they seem like well made knives. My question is ,who makes them? Some look like Queen knives and others like vintage Camillus .Could they be made on old tooling or on contract? Also I have a chance to buy one of their yellow lockback models for $25-good deal? How would they compare with Case? I'm mostly a high tech tactical kind of a knife person,so thanks for any info/opinions.

The higher end Moore Makers are made by Queen. The lower end ones are currently made by Utica and Bear and Sons (and will have a U or B after the model number). Older lower-end ones were made by Camillus. The Camillus made ones you see on eBay are NOS (new old stock), not newly manufactured. I have a couple Camillus made 3300s, and they're great little stockmans. I'd recommend a Camillus made one over a Bear or Utica made one, even if it costs a bit more.

The cheaper ones are made by bear and sons, a company that doesn't seem to have good feedback on this forum.

Of the upper-end patterns I've had a 5-blade sowbelly and a muskrat in yellow jigged bone. Both were top-shelf quality and I especially like the blades being 1095.

Some models are made by Canal Street Cutlery, Jack knife with trapper blades and regular trapper models exist.

I have a big bone handled stockman and a muskrat in yellow bone , both in 1095, both very good, well-made and well-finished.

I recently bought a "Bear" Mooremaker, cannot recommend; not at all sharp and the awl was bent. I would have returned it, but the cost to ship back was not worth it.

Wished I bought one of the other high end versions, I chose the Bear because of the awl.

I have a smooth bone Moore Maker XL stockman, pattern 5304, Queen made, 1095 blades, made in 1998. LOVE IT!

Oh Yes!!! Me too!

The Queen Moore Makers are amongst the best made production slipjoints.

The only reason I don't have more of them is that I also like stainless steel on a slippie :D

My wife and daughter got me a Moore Maker model 5301 937/8") for Christmas. I love it. 1095 steel that was easy to sharpen, excellent fit and finish. As close to "perfect" as I've seen. You will not be sorry!

Are you talking about the brand? They're made in Matador TX and they are top notch, google them.

If he's talking about the ones in Texas they are handmade and have no affiliation with any company.

Maddogg...

We hate to break it to you this way...but even today Canal Street is providing Moore Maker with 2 bl. Trappers,Swell Trappers and a "Pinch" single blade lock back.....

Thanks for the input folks! I didn't know that they were around since at least 98,thought they were something new.If Queen makes the high end ones,no wonder they are so nice.I took a closer look at that lockback and it must have been made by Bear-kind of rough.I have been hanging around in the land of carbon fiber- super steel-titanium-chop a tank in half knives and have some catching up to do!

Hardly handmade, and they are affiliated with a bunch of different makers. Moore Maker has knives made to their specifications under contract with a number of different makers, i e Queen, Camillus, Bear, Canal Street, and I think Boker also.

They are not made in Texas and never have been. Mooremaker has their production done by Queen, Bear, Utica, and Canal St. And in the past by Camillus.

I had the pleasure of handling a few Moore Maker Trappers today. One in composite cloths and the other in bone. The fit and finish was comparable to the Case knives next to them.
