Does anyone know when Grohmann stopped putting a large capital S in a circle on their model #1? My father gave me his knife that I think was purchased in the 70's. I'm guessing the S stands for "Stainless"? Any other information on the knife would be welcome.

We don't have an exact year, but it was approximately 20 years ago that we stopped using the circled S for stainless and circled C for carbon.

We added the words stainless or carbon right into the tang stamp after that as we started marking 'seconds' or flawed knives with an 's'. This 's' was stamped into the handle and/or engraved into the backside of the blade. We still engrave seconds with the 's' to this day.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, Eric! That is what I had heard, but until you confirmed it, I wasn't 100% sure.

It seems that many designs that have been around for the length of time that the D. H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife has, get copied. Especially if, like the Canadian Belt Knife, the design does an excellent job of what it was intended to do.
