I saw this different anvil for sale in Windsor, Oregon yesterday. I don't remember ever seeing one with a horn shaped like this.

The guy wants $500. Can any of you guys use it?

That makes sense. Still, it's in really nice shape, and I hated to leave it. Someday I'll wish it was out back.

Not worth it, and just a whacked-out shape for really forging knives on. Or anything but horseshoes. Not much mass at all under the proportionately tiny face area. And, you could get a better deal on a farrier's anvil that size NEW.

But, I do understand the pull of an anvil for sale. If you really would like to have one, I suggest keeping an eye on Craigslist. They pop up for more reasonable prices from time to time almost anywhere if you look long enough.

I'm still kicking myself over a 300 lb. Fisher for $300 that I just couldn't quite afford back in the Maui days. Craigslist there, too.

Like Salem, I'd want a LOT more mass/weight in anvil for that price. It is difficult to tell from the photo, but I'd be surprised if that weighed in at as much as 75 lbs. That being said, if the bugga were in the $100 range I'd snatch it up in heart beat!

Two things:
Deal spotting and auction spotting should be avoided in Shop Talk.
Also, $500 for that anvil is way too much. Half that would be a bit high IMHO.

The older farriers anvils had more mass around the waist..More like a regular london pattern but with double pritchels holes and a clipping horn..Heres a old Trenton farriers anvil I traded for at the scrap yard..Its a good anvil. It has a bit of sway on the face but its from honest use, about 140# I think. It really rings but not near as much as our 100# forged Arm&Hammer anvil..Its downright painful..Our 200# fisher sounds like your forging on wet leather..Its wonderful..

LOL. Sam has one. Yes that things rings like no other. I think that's the same One that's been on Portland CL forever. I have to give it props for looking awesome. It was $750 forever and went down to $400 before it went off CL.
I forget the name. There's a thread on one on Iforgeiron someplace.
Honestly it almost is a cartoon version of an anvil. I honestly want one, not to forge. ( sorry Salem I have a 300# Fisher) but just to sit and look cool.

They are awesome looking, a shrieking nightmare to work on though! As it says, it is a multi products brand anvil. Matchless' overprice antiques on sleazebay just sold one he cleaned up for like 750$.

I paid 25$ for mine in as good condition as the one the OP posted.

I hate to derail or resurrect this, but I was wondering about some anvil substitutes. What do you guys think about 12" of 4" diameter round 4140 bar (about 50lb). I can buy those pre heat treated, and I figured a could use a hole saw to make a 4" hole in a stump or 2x4 base. This seems like it would be really solid, and insulated thus significantly reducing the ring, which is important because I live in the suburbs.

Hey, Kentucky.
I have the same Trenton you have. Magnets under the horn and on the waist really help deaden the ring.

I think it would be great on end half sunk in a bucket of concrete, especially if you could square off a side or two. Would you do the HT on it then? Can you get many of these for a good price?

well not really very cheap, a 4" dia x 12" heat treated round would run me $130 online, which is a lot but I will be going to a couple of local steel supply places soon to see what I can see maybe there will be some cutoffs or something.

I built a forge, it was pretty easy and relatively cheap, but now I cant do much without an anvil I'm kinda stuck, its really frustrating.

Nebulae,
I just sold an anvil last weekend. I wish I would have sold it to you. I am sending you an email, I might have something to help.
