Interesting tree falling

Not a lot of arbutus trees around, that's for sure. Dropping dead trees like that with a big crown is super tricky. Lots to go wrong.

Buckin Billy Ray, love his videos, his handles may be poor but he sells rehandled axes faster than he can put them together. Check out his videos and website for kicks. He gets a pretty penny for his axes, way above my self imposed limit.

My daddy had a phrase for most everything. One of his favorite ones was: "the blind leading the blind". I never really gave it thought, or understood what it meant until the internet came along. The meaning of the phrase actually slapped me in the face HARD when I started watching YouTube a couple of years ago.

I wouldn’t call him the blind leading the blind. I’d say he knows more about felling than most people. If you want to talk about blind leading the blind YouTube personalities the first one I think of is wranglerstar.

My problem is with his choice of hafts. Talk about run out! That haft would never have broken when it did if it had proper grain. From what I could see, none of his axes had good hafts.
Hey mate I am looking at getting about 10 axe handles and need advice on choosing handles. What should I be looking looking out for besides besides grain which runs parallel to the bit?

Buckin is great and hes got a great bit of experience,
I saw a live stream of his the day before that video was published and he pointed out the run out, saying it wasn't great, he wasnt happy with it but he didnt think it was much of an issue.

Hes not so much as "the blind" but hes really not very sympathetic to his work axes, the ones that get sent to clients get babied of course but all his favorites have huge chips out of the blades.
Hes no wrangletstar.

Occasionally he'll find a perpendicular grained handle he really likes and call it a leaf spring handle, and says that it really shouldn't matter as long as you dont miss and hit the handle, which I'd have to agree on that somewhat.

Of course you'd have to take my opinion with a grain of salt cause iv sent him many packages and have a buckin special

From what I have seen Buckin is really solid spiting fire wood. I haven't watched even half his content though. I do know that if you pull up a review on a new axe on youtube you will probably get some guy that absolutely looks like it was the first time they have ever used an axe or some fool like Wranglerstar. Good content is hard to find but there is some.

Buckin sure isn’t afraid to cut a tree close to a house. Some of his residential tree work makes my butt pucker. He apparently was a timber faller for close to twenty years and is very open about getting smashed twice.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. There's way to many self proclaimed experts creating content. Even ol' Billy Ray is taking all of the credit for placing a tree in a lane it would have fell in if beavers had fell it after dark.

Au-Craftsman- To really answer your haft question you first need to decide what the axe is to be used for. If it to be hung on the wall, haft it anyway you want. This is what I do. For felling, bucking, limbing, and splitting-in order of importance is: no run out; no defects; no mixed sapwood and heartwood; grain parallel to the bit. The amount of growth rings is also important, but changes from species to species. As for species, my hands down choice for a haft from 24" and up is American Hickory. I might add that American Hickory was, and still is, the species of choice for every MAJOR axe maker in the world. For axes and hatchets with shorter hafts used for carving, shaping, bushcraft, etc., a variety of species will work.
If you are playing in the woods with an axe the above info is not as important as it is/was, for guys like me who used an axe everyday to make a living.
I never have seen anybody carry so many axes to fell one tree. I only carried one, sometimes two.

Old Billy had five axes to sell so he brought all of them!! He is master salesman/manipulator: Did you see how he was trying to hype that flat cheek
Norlund?
This guy has created little Cult following. I get really bad Osho/David Koresh vibe whenever I hear him advising his sheep followers to focus on POSITIVITY.

Yep, for shore.

Tough crowd! I wouldn't say that you were wrong though and we might as well call it like we see it. Much respect for the honest takes.

Speaking of youtube C crbnSteeladdict hit the nail right on the head. There is a crazy amount of shills on there. So many folks are so easily led and they have no ability to look at things objectively or think for them selves.
"Gotta pretty good lean to it, so probably gonna do quite a big under cut to it" :)
