Hi all. What are the advantages/disadvantages, if any, of internal stop pins on folding knives? Thanks in advance!

Frank

The only knife I have with an internal stop pin is Kizer Feist.
It is different from what was discussed in the above thread.

Mine was the first version and was gritty at the beginning presumably because the stop pin track milling was rough.

I have been thinking about stop pins lately too. My question is what are they made of? Specifically in ZT knives. Is the stop pin on my 0900 titanium, like the rest of it? I read the link btw, it was vague and argumentative, not all that informative.

I dont see any advantages , except for some designs it might be only way ,
but in most cases it only takes material away in most important place and blade hanging on two small lines of steel ,
usually I use my knives for simple stuff but if something goes wrong I want my knife to handle extra force .

This. If you look at the blades of a lot of the knives with internal stop pins, you can see that the lateral strength of the blade is significantly reduced. I have seen pictures of internal stop blades that fractured across the milled out area of the tang.

There are two things people may refer to regarding internal stop pins. One is pin on blade with grooves on frame. The other is groove on blade with pin in frame. I don’t see an advantage for the groove in blade version. Pin in blade with grooves in the frame can provide a little extra lateral support for the knife, in the same way that external stop pins do.

At the end of the day, I really don’t think it makes a real difference.

Internal stop pins have channels where gunk can collect. When I opened up my Southard to find out why the flipping action wasn’t what it used to be I found lint or something in that channel. It wasn’t like a big piece of lint but rather looks like it was made up from a bunch of little specs of dust that mixed with a tiny bit of oil and gunked up the channel.
