Investigator pen vs tsa

I use to carry a Hinderer pen whenever I travelled, never had a problem domestic or international, nobody gave it a second look... but since everybody and their pet dog makes a tactical pen nowadays and plenty of fools are waving them around, I wouldn't risk bringing anything that I'm not willing to surrender at the line. I'm back to carrying my Rotring.
An old "German" brass Rotring may not be "tacti-cool" but, they sure do work well. 
The thing with TSA screening, what gets through at one airport will be confiscated at another. What is allowed or disallowed at different TSA checkpoints seems to be random at times which is sort of the point isn't it with the war on public perception and Al Qaeda?
