I'm not asking about sellers on Amazon themselves, I guess. But is Amazon itself an authorized seller of Spyderco?

Huge fan of Spyderco, but also a fan of saving $$$.

Definitive answer out there?

Thanks!

Amazon is an authorized Spyderco dealer. However, they also have a no question return policy which people can take advantage of (buy a real one, return a fake for refund) and they also have a habit of mixing inventory (filling orders through third parties). Between these two things, it is very possible to get a fake through Amazon proper, and many people have. It's not worth the risk to me.

I'm not a fan because they don't follow MAP pricing. I figure I would rather support one of the retailers that follow the guidelines Spyderco has set forth.

Wrong. They always require return reason, and now if you returned too many times, you may be banned from ever use their service.

I don't think spyderco would supply supply them if there were major concerns. I once bought a used windshield wiper from oreilly. I didn't go on a windshield wiper forum demonizing them but whatever.

Often wondered about that myself. Thought MAP pricing was a requirement for being an authorized dealer? Check out the popular models such as the Delica and Endura. You will see different pricing based on color. Some of the less popular colors appear to me to be priced below MAP (and those prices include PRIME 2 day shipping for me). What gives?

Agreed, I don't get this at all, that the rules apply to everyone except Amazon.

Sure you have to click what reason you want to return an item for but that has nothing to do with what was said. You could still very easily buy a knife from amazon and return a fake to them. I'm sure you couldn't make a habbit of doing this continually but you could easily do it a several times and they would never be the wiser. They do not really inspect their returns very well and even if they did they wouldn't know how to spot a fake anyway. I've purchased a g shock from amazon that showed up in a bag without the box and had obviously been worn. This goes to show they don't spend anytime inspecting returns.

Amazon warehouse 'droids' wouldn't know a Spyderco from a nail file, let alone real from fake.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a Spyderco or any other quality name-brand knife from them.

Didnt know Amazon is an authorized Spyderco dealer. Now that I know it, I will not have problems purchasing spydercos from it. Shipping is among the fastest and return policy is unmatched. Among the several knives bought from Amazon, none of them has any issue. With that being said, for knives over $100 I choose to purchase from dealers like bladehq and KWs.

I have Amazon Prime but there is no way I'm using Amazon to buy my knives. Too many good knife stores to buy from online.

I'll gladly pay the $6.80 extra for Priority Mail and order from a reputable dealer.

Amazon is big enough that they can basically just say "so what" to Spyderco's MAP pricing. I buy my knives for smaller dealers, not retail bullies like Amazon.

I received this forthright response from Spyderco just now:

"Although Amazon does purchase directly from us they also purchase from other sources. Due to this practice, as well as their shared inventory with 3rd party marketplace retailers, we cannot guarantee that a "Spyderco" purchased from Amazon will always be legitimate. It's unfortunate, but we feel it's important to be honest. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you,

the purchase from other sources says a lot and explains many issues amazon is going to have to deal with eventually.

I personally would NOT buy ANY knife on Amazon, for all the reasons stated above.

I'll be the dissenting voice here for one simple fact - I was shopping for a black/black PM2 over the holidays and couldnt find one anywhere EXCEPT Amazon and a dealer that was asking $30 more than I paid at Amazon. I dont mind paying a bit more to support small business, but paying an extra 30 bones and waiting 7-10 days for ground ship isnt realistic - at least to me.

I recently purchased several knives on Amazon, as best as I can tell they are legitimate. But I didn't even consider getting the expensive ones there, and won't.

I find it funny how people always seem to talk negatively about any retailer that does such a good job they grow into a very large very successful business with great service great selection and great prices. Damn them for succeeding and being too competitive!

No, its because big retailers often become predatory and can't keep track of the QC of what they're selling, not because they're successful.
