I was close to buying one in the past. I know people carrying theirs for years...

But, when I was thinking about getting one, some people also told me about omega springs breaking all the time - while others claimed they are using their knives for years and their springs never broke, or it took several years for springs to break.

Next thing is - the feel. Few Benchmades I held in my hands (Bugout, Griptilian and mini Griptilian) felt cheap. I know they aren't cheap, but they feel cheap.

Then the price for the materials - some brands offer Magnacut for the same price or even less than Benchmade asks for S30V. While S30V isn't bad steel - it's still not worth that kind of money.

As far as threads about their lock failing - that's only Adamas. I've seen videos of their other models getting batonned without issues, which is crazy for a folder. So I'd say they are tough - unless you're buying Adamas...

They are fidgety, designs are good, reliability seems to be hit and miss (looking at you omega springs), most models are really tough, and it seems to be really overpriced for the materials you're getting... the only premium about it seems to be the price, materials and the feel just aren't there.

I really wanted one but could never justify it for the prices they put for what they offer. Don't get me wrong - they are good, they just aren't that good to cost that much.

So question is - is it worth it to you?

They are worth it when you get them off the exchange here at a nice discount😜.

Unless you have to have it right now, eventually you will find what you want for sale here...

There a nice one for sale in the folder section,. Can't remember the model name but for the $130 its priced at that's already $100 + off.....

I have a couple Griptilians left. They are great tools, I bought mine for a little over $100, the older ones in 154CM. I don’t care what steel they use or how reliable they are, I wouldn’t buy another unless it was at a good discount, just because they feel cheap. Not because they are junk.

If you've already tried out a few models and didn't care for them, then don't buy Benchmades. Don't worry about the opinions on the internet, don't seek validation or persuasion. You've already done your homework and arrived at your conclusion.

If you're still unsure, go back to wherever you fondled the Bugouts and Griptilians and either try them out again or check out a different model. Maybe the FRN / Grivory or G10 scales weren't for you. Maybe check out a model with aluminum scales like the 940.

Ignore the internet, choose what's right for you and enjoy it. If that's a Benchmade, cool. If that's another brand, awesome. Your knife should be your choice.

"Worth it" . . .?

I s any knife, at any price, "worth it" depends on the circumstance and context surrounding it's purchase.

If you are working a ranch and need a rugged knife, your perspective might be different from an that of an office worker.

If you are buying for yourself or a relative about to be deployed to a war zone, you might be willing to pay any price . . . . top dollar . . . .for a tactical-utility knife you have confidence in.

Some people just want blade-candy . . .look at the pictures posted on these forums.

Ignore the internet
… he says on the internet. 🤣

Benchmade’s had issues most companies do with becoming popular. Right now they command a price I’m generally not willing to pay for what they’re making. (If you can’t baton it through a cinder block, what’s the point?). I was gifted an older Mini Grip I love very much, but I almost never carry it.

What MadeonaBench says doesn’t leave much room for discussion (which is why we’re here), but he’s right that you probably already have a reliable gut feel for what’s right for you.

Yes they are worth it. A Benchmade will last a lifetime. I have some that are 20+ years old. Same with Spyderco, Cold Steel and other great knifemakers.

I have a picture in my head of the people that complain about Benchmade prices, instead of quietly not buying one. They wear $5 velcro shoes and try to haggle at Walmart.

A $20 Mora will last a lifetime. A Ganzo might even last a lifetime. I don't see being usable for a long time as a feature. It's a requirement.

I use my knife many times a day at work. A Ganzo wouldn’t make it. Plus they steal intellectual property. A Mora is a solid knife for $20. I am not sure it will last a lifetime but it might.

Benchmades are now too expensive for me. I used 65.00 Griptilians for several years as work knives. Also 710 s. As the prices increased, I switched to Soyderco , which was a much better value for the money. As Spyderco s prices have increased, I switched again, to Cold Steel, again for higher value for my dollar. Now I rarely look at a knife over 120.00. My last several purchases have been Kizer and Civivi for edc. For work knives, I still use my Cold Steels, occasionally an old Spyderco.

Dont be like me. Initially I only cared for the balisongs and by the time I had money to buy, they were already pushing in the $300s for the secondary market. As a hs kid, I didnt have that kinda money to waste on knives. As I got older, the model I liked was the 707 sequel and of course I did not buy it cause it seemed rather gimmicky. Sadly after they discontinued the model, I made the decision to buy one. After getting the sequel, for some reason I also bought the budget mini grip. which imo is a more affordable all purpose version of the sequel. My 707 sequel is a constant companion when Im generally not wearing scrubs.

I wasn't saying Ganzo was a reputable company. I understand how they've earned their place around here. Just that I think one could potentially last for 80 years.
I saw a video of some fool hammering a Mora into a tree then standing/bouncing on it. Wanna try that with a Bugout? Think the scales would survive?

There are actually a bunch of videos of people doing exactly that with Bugouts as well as batonning them. I was shocked.

I have a Ganzo that someone gave me. It is definitely a knife but it doesn’t feel solid or hold an edge well.
