Is buffing compound toxic?

Yesterday I was buffing up an 8 inch chef's blade and noticed that my dog was eating the bits of emery compound that were on the floor. I'm just wondering if the stuff is at all toxic (JacksonLea green emery and white rouge compound). In case any of you are wondering why a dog would eat that stuff, you need to know that it's the same dog that I once caught eating a roll of duct tape and pieces of sheet rock. As far as I'm concerned this may just be an improvement.:D

It is just fine abrasives in there. He might have some soft or hard output but should be fine. Watch for the next few days and make sure.

Dogs love the stuff, basically it is tallow, and aluminum oxide. The MSDS gives a clean bill of health but warns that the spent dust should be avoided on the basis that anything that is inhaled could damage your lungs.

Whenever Maggy gets into the compound her stools come out hard and dark green, no apparent physical damage however.

I usually put some into the microwave every morning, and when it is nice and soft, I spread it over my toast. Sorta helps polish my innards after breathing all that grinding dust.:D

Thanks a lot for the info guys, especially George for checking the MSDS sheets.

thread resurrected from the dead...

my dog ate an entire bar of green cmpd..sigh...nothing to be too concerned about i guess?

My rottie ate a 2lb bar of "white" compound and left all the others.... guess his intestines are polished now. Had a yard full of buffing compound in no time.

Get a copy of the MSDS and look at the ingredients. If the abrasive is chromium oxide it might be worth talking to a vet about what to watch for. The toxicity of chromium oxide varies widely depending on which form of oxide is involved, and there's always the possibility of chromium 6 being present as a comtaminant.

Glad I found this thread.
My buddies dog just at like 1/2 a bar of the white stropping compound I have.

Shes a puppy and gets into everything.
Ughhh.

Glad everyone has had no I'll effects on the dogs.

Sorry to Necro an old thread!!!
