Is scout carry actually dangerous or is it paranoia driven?

Hi everyone I am thinking of carrying one off my knife in a scout carry but is it as dangerous as people say it is? I'm planning to carry a kydex sheaths with no teklok so it should be relatively low profile but what's everyone's take on this? Is it really going to damage my back as badly as people say it will during a fall (a light one like when I slip on a bit of mud and fall on my back while walking etc...)?

Scout carry really is just a horizontal carry sheath i.e. sheath can be placed anywhere on the belt - for example appendix carry, so to speak.
I assume you are referring to MOB (Middle Of Back) carry.
And yes, that could be potentially hazardous to you health.
I ride a motorbike. Carry a steel bar perpendicular to my spine - I think perhaps not.
 
Besides being dangerous (having a hard lump of steel right at the base of your spine), I just don't find it very comfortable or convenient.

In the city, it gets in the way when sitting down and catches on my shirt or jacket. Outdoors, it gets in the way of my pack and just doesn't seem like a good idea when riding my horses (I do long horseback trips and had a few nasty falls through the years).
 
I carry one in that spot regularly. Comfortable to me. Resheathing may take a little extra care.

Falling on it would not be good at all. Though I can't remember the last time I've slipped like that straight on my back. If you're really worried about it carry it up front appendix crossdraw.
 
I crossdraw carry in the 10 o'clock position and have found this to be the most comfortable (for me). I have tried different sized blades in the scout or 6 o'clock positions and have just not found it comfortable for EDC (try getting in and out of your car a few times). I do find it comfortable with a larger fixed blade while going for a walk or hike, but it comes off when I get to my destination.

As far as paranoia goes for falling on it... you can say that about any place you potentially carry a fixed blade or folder. It will just hurt more depending on where it is and how you fall on it :) I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep experimenting on belt placement until you find what is comfortable for you :thumbup:
 
I prefer a cross draw belt location (horizontal sheath) for small fixed blades.

If visible, the middle of the back carry would be a place easily accessible to somebody who wants to take your knife from you. As far as falling goes, it would hurt and that is not a location I want for either a knife or handgun.
 
Falling on it is unlikely. If falling backwards you'll probably land on your butt, shoulders, or elbows. Landing on a sheathed knife in any configuration probably won't feel good, honestly.

But all said and done I prefer off hand side carry for cross draw unless I have a sheath and pants that, together, allow for convenient carry on the right thigh. I clip my Mora to my right side pocket or other available attachment point, but belt carry knives go on my left hip.
 
I think the issue is more re a pistol that's held inside your waistband up higher and right against your body. A little revolver tucked up there will have a nasty pressure point.

Knife will be a bit lower and inline with your belt. Wear a thick leather belt like a Bianchi or Galco and that'll act like armour. Pick a knife with a smooth flat profile so there are no hot spots.
 
I have never enjoyed kydex tek lock carry in the small of the back. I also never carry back there vertically. It is always canted at at least 30 degrees. Makes it much more comfortable. And I prefer leather since it will be slimmer and along with a slim fixed blade will not offer much to injure a back. Having said that I have never fallen flat on my back, typically sideways or on my butt, neither of which are affected by the blade carry. I do prefer side carry, however.
 
I prefer cross draw carry or side carry depending on the knife and circumstances.

Why would a leather sheath be slimmer than a Kydex sheath?

Assume you mean a Kydex sheath would be bulkier if a TekLok is attached.

I make Kydex sheaths for IWB carry with or without a loop attached for the belt. Im a firm believer in 'sash carry' and the sheaths are just for convenience of carry - not concealment.

Kydex sheaths can be made VERY slim depending on design.
 
I carry my Gerber Prodigy scout style (MOB) when I'm in the mountains and have my holster for my handgun on my strong side carry position. I wear a Ares Aegis belt that handles the weight of both of them and its nice and thick so that "Glass Breaker" on the prodigy doesn't poke me.
 
I scout carry my bk11 at 1 oclock, gives me the option of strong side reverse grip or weakside cross draw, works great

I think most people's opinion is pointing to not doing it so I think I will stick to the crossdraw :)
